Students Shine at State Band, Orchestra, and Choir Festivals

Overview of the Festivals

More than 1,000 students from Northeast and Jefferson middle schools, as well as Midland and Dow high schools, took part in adjudicated festivals organized by the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) and the Michigan School Vocal Music Association (MSVMA). These events provide students with a unique opportunity to showcase their musical talents in front of expert panels of judges. In addition to receiving scores, participants also get valuable constructive feedback that helps them improve their performances.

Students spend months preparing for these festivals, working closely with their music directors to perfect their pieces. The preparation process is rigorous and requires dedication, discipline, and a strong commitment to musical excellence.

Performance Elements

On the day of the event, students perform their prepared works, but they also face an additional challenge: sight-reading music they have never encountered before. This aspect of the festival tests their ability to quickly interpret and perform new material. Their performance on this task is also evaluated and contributes to their overall score.

All the judges’ scores are combined to determine the final rating for each ensemble. This comprehensive evaluation ensures that students are assessed not only on their technical skills but also on their ability to adapt and perform under pressure.

MSBOA Festival Results

Over 600 Midland Public Schools band and orchestra students participated in the MSBOA Festival at Bay City Central and Bay City Western from March 5 to March 7. Ensembles in the MSBOA competition can receive a rating from one to five, with one being the highest possible score, known as first division.
