OSU Athletes Share Mental Health Insights at Scioto County Summit

Addressing Mental Health in Athletics

Portsmouth, Ohio, recently hosted the Scioto County Mindset Matters Summit, an event that focused on the critical issue of athlete mental health and wellness. The summit brought together a variety of voices, including athletes, coaches, and mental health professionals, to discuss the pressures and stresses that come with competitive sports.

Personal Story Behind the Initiative

Tamera Carter, founder of the TC3 Memorial Foundation, shared her personal journey that led to the creation of the organization. “My brother passed in May of 2024, and we started the organization in August of 2024 just to honor his memory and also promote student athlete mental wellness,” she explained. Carter emphasized the importance of the foundation’s mission, hoping that coaches and family members would be able to see the value in promoting mental health awareness and breaking down the stigma surrounding it.

Keynote Speakers and Their Messages

The event featured notable speakers such as Scoonie Penn, a former Ohio State Point Guard, Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith, and former Buckeye Bobby Carpenter. These individuals took the stage to share their insights on mental health with Joseph Payton, a local journalist. Penn highlighted the challenges that young athletes face both on and off the field. “Through athletics, you know, there’s a lot of pressure, a lot of things these young people go through, off the court, off the field, off the you know the sport that they are playing, just help different ways of coping with it,” he said. Penn’s message was clear: “It’s okay to not be okay.”

Breaking the Stigma

Bobby Carpenter, another former athlete, spoke about the challenges men face when discussing personal issues. “So guys in the locker room, men especially, don’t want to talk about any type of personal problems they have. They more successful you are, the ‘tougher’ you are, the more masculine the sport the sport you play, your going to have even less of those conversations,” he said. This insight underscores the need for open dialogue and support systems within athletic communities.

The Role of Mental Health Professionals

Mental health experts at the summit emphasized the importance of having former OSU athletes speak about mental health. Their presence can help pave the way for current athletes to learn how to take care of themselves mentally and emotionally. By sharing their own experiences, these athletes can inspire others to seek help and prioritize their well-being.

Creating a Supportive Environment

The summit aimed to create a supportive environment where student athletes could learn about coping strategies and the importance of mental health. It also provided a platform for mental health professionals to connect with athletes and offer guidance. The discussions highlighted the need for a cultural shift in how mental health is perceived in sports, encouraging open conversations and proactive approaches to wellness.

Conclusion

The Scioto County Mindset Matters Summit served as a crucial step in addressing the mental health challenges faced by athletes. Through the efforts of organizations like the TC3 Memorial Foundation and the participation of high-profile athletes, the conversation around mental health in sports is gaining momentum. As more voices join the dialogue, the hope is that athletes will feel empowered to seek help and prioritize their mental well-being.
