Waltham High Launches New Salon to Train Future Cosmetologists

WALTHAM, Mass. — Waltham High School is shaping the next generation of cosmetologists with a state-of-the-art classroom and working salon that offers students hands-on experience in a professional environment.

The new facility has become a dream come true for students interested in pursuing careers in hair, skin, and nail care. Cosmetology instructor Jackie Powers praised the space, calling it one of the best salons she has ever worked in.

“It’s amazing. It’s like working in a high-end salon. I’ve never seen anything like this in a school, and we’ve been so lucky. Waltham provided top-of-the-line everything,” Powers said.

The program includes 25 stations where students can practice their skills, along with specialized areas dedicated to different aspects of cosmetology. This setup allows students to gain real-world experience by offering services to actual customers.

Junior Giselle is one of the students who will benefit from the program. She described the experience as both exciting and nerve-wracking.

“It’s exciting and nerve-wracking. We’ve mainly worked on our family and friends and some teachers in the building, but it’s definitely exciting to get people from the public because it just makes it 10 times more real,” she said.

Students who complete the program can graduate with 1,000 hours of training, which is a significant step toward becoming licensed professionals. After passing the state exam, they can begin styling hair professionally.

For junior Avery, the new cosmetology classroom and salon were a revelation.

“It really felt like this is what I want to do in the future, and it got me really excited,” she explained.

The program not only provides students with the technical skills needed for a career in cosmetology but also helps them build confidence and prepare for the realities of the industry.
