Snow Showers Loom for NY as Cold Front Approaches
Mother Nature isn’t done smacking around New York, threatening to dump snow showers upstate and the city with chilly rain this week.
“You’re going to have a cold front coming on through that may produce some showers across the New York City area late Friday into Friday night, and then it does cool down as the breezes pick up on Saturday,” said Carl Erickson, a senior meteorologist at Accuweather, in an interview with The Post on Sunday.
The temperatures are expected to drop from the low 50s to the mid-40s. This shift could bring a noticeable chill to the region, especially as the winds increase over the weekend.
Parts of the Adirondacks in upstate New York that were already experiencing snow on Sunday could see additional light snow showers as the cold front settles in, according to the expert.

“There could be some snow showers across the Adirondacks; the highest terrain could have some snow showers out of this, but at this point, there’s not a significant snow event across the Northeast at this point,” he said.
The tristate area has been hit hard by relentless snowstorms this winter. The season has brought a series of severe weather events that have disrupted daily life and tested the resilience of residents and infrastructure alike.

Winter Storm Fern buried parts of New York City in 1 to 2 feet of snow. At least 28 people were killed countrywide in a variety of storm-related accidents or illnesses.
Winter Storm Hernando came just a few weeks later, dumping an extra 15 to 20 inches of snow on top of local heaps that hadn’t melted. The cumulative effect of these storms has left many areas struggling to recover, with roads still blocked and power lines damaged in some regions.
As the region braces for another round of unpredictable weather, experts are advising residents to stay prepared. While the current forecast doesn’t predict a major snowfall, the combination of rain and wind could create hazardous conditions, especially on roads and sidewalks.
Here are some key points to consider:
- Cold Front Impact: The approaching cold front is expected to bring a mix of rain and snow showers, particularly in upstate areas. Residents should monitor local forecasts for updates.
- Temperature Drop: A significant drop in temperature is anticipated, with highs falling into the mid-40s. This could lead to icy conditions, especially overnight.
- Adirondack Conditions: Snow showers are possible in the higher elevations of the Adirondacks, though not expected to be a major event. Travelers should remain cautious in mountainous regions.
- Historical Context: The recent string of winter storms has highlighted the need for better emergency preparedness. Communities are working to improve response strategies for future events.
- Public Safety: Authorities are urging residents to take precautions, including keeping emergency supplies on hand and avoiding unnecessary travel during inclement weather.
With the winter season still ongoing, it’s clear that New York and surrounding areas will continue to face challenges. However, with proper planning and awareness, the community can navigate these weather events more effectively.
