This Month Matters: Huntsville Entrepreneur Launches Alcohol-Free Brand and Champions Maternal Health
A Journey of Purpose and Empowerment
In Huntsville, Alabama, a local entrepreneur is using her personal experiences to create a powerful impact on the lives of women and families. For Women’s History Month, Tatyana White, a digital host, sat down with Dr. Ashley Hunt-Poole, founder of Mocktails for Mommy and the nonprofit Mommy & Me. Hunt-Poole’s story is one of resilience, innovation, and advocacy, as she blends business, community support, and personal experience to uplift mothers and raise awareness about maternal health.
Hunt-Poole’s journey began during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic while she was pregnant with her daughter. Inspired by the need for non-alcoholic beverages that could be enjoyed by herself and others in the community, she started creating drinks that would become the foundation of her business. What began as a personal solution quickly evolved into a thriving enterprise. Today, her alcohol-free beverage brand has grown into a broader lifestyle movement under the brand Hello Mamá, with products available in major retailers like Sam’s Club and Walmart, as well as local venues such as the Orion Amphitheater.
A Deeper Mission
After the birth of her youngest child, Hunt-Poole faced a life-changing experience when she developed postpartum preeclampsia. She described it as the worst experience of her life and felt compelled to create more awareness around this serious condition in Alabama. Her goal was to provide support and resources to other mothers going through similar challenges.
Through further research, Hunt-Poole discovered that Alabama lacked a dedicated preeclampsia foundation or comprehensive information about the condition. This realization led her to expand her nonprofit, Mommy & Me, by adding Preeclampsia Now to its mission. The initiative aims to educate and empower mothers, families, and healthcare providers about the importance of awareness and early detection.
Preeclampsia, a potentially dangerous pregnancy-related condition, often goes undetected or misunderstood. Hunt-Poole emphasizes the importance of education and self-advocacy, encouraging mothers to seek support from medical professionals and to be proactive about their health.
Supporting Mothers Through Community Efforts
Hunt-Poole’s nonprofit, Mommy & Me, was born from her own experiences as a single mother who moved to Huntsville. She wanted to create a space where other women could find support and resources. Today, the organization offers scholarships, community events, and health advocacy initiatives aimed at supporting families across North Alabama.
One of the nonprofit’s newest initiatives is the Preeclampsia Awareness Walk, scheduled for Saturday, May 16 in Huntsville. The event will provide valuable resources, education, and support for families while raising visibility around maternal health challenges.
Expanding Her Platform
Beyond her nonprofit work, Hunt-Poole continues to grow her brand and platform. She is featured on the YouTube reality series Nextville, which highlights entrepreneurs in Huntsville, and will be a vendor at the 4th Annual Taste of Soul Festival at the Orion Amphitheater on Saturday, March 28.
Despite her growing success, Hunt-Poole remains focused on her mission. She believes that with intention and determination, anyone can achieve their goals. Her message to women is one of strength, honesty, and self-compassion.
“You are stronger than you think,” she said. “It’s okay to ask for help, take a step back, and give yourself a mental break. It’s also okay to have moments where you need to express your emotions and find release.”
A Message of Hope and Encouragement
As she continues to grow both her business and nonprofit, Hunt-Poole hopes her story inspires other women to turn their challenges into purpose and to support one another. Her journey is a testament to the power of resilience, community, and the importance of advocating for oneself and others.
