New Marion Gym Provides Judgment-Free Play for Kids on the Autism Spectrum
MARION, Iowa (KCRG) – A new gym in Marion is offering a unique and welcoming environment for children on the autism spectrum and their families. The We Rock the Spectrum Kid’s Gym is designed to provide a safe and inclusive space where kids can play, explore, and feel comfortable without judgment.
Ivy Sylvester, a young girl who hasn’t been officially diagnosed with autism, often experiences overstimulation during activities. Her mother, Allison Sylvester, described how Ivy enjoys herself but sometimes becomes overwhelmed.
“She’ll have fun but then she gets so worked up that even though she has this fantastic time, she’ll end up leaving in tears,” Allison said.
The gym in Marion is specifically created to accommodate children with special needs. It features a variety of sensory-friendly equipment, including different types of swings, a rock wall, and toys that cater to various sensory preferences. Ivy was particularly drawn to the zip slider.
“Definitely the zipline. I’ve gone on it over and over again,” Ivy said.
The idea for the gym came from Joe Louison, one of the owners, who was inspired by his 9-year-old son Joey, who is on the autism spectrum.
“We’ve learned a lot through the process of working with Joey. And we wanted to be able to help parents that are like us and the kids and give the kids a place that they can go that neither of them have to say that they’re sorry,” Joe said.
While the gym was developed with children on the autism spectrum in mind, it is open to all children. This inclusivity made it easier for Allison to bring both Ivy and her sister to the facility.
“To know that it really is a space where you can come in no matter what is fantastic,” Allison said.
Ivy also shared her positive first impression of the gym.
“Immediately when I walked in I was like: ‘this is going to be fun,’” she said.
The We Rock the Spectrum Kid’s Gym offers more than just physical activity—it provides a sense of belonging and understanding for children and their families. It’s a place where kids can be themselves, and parents can relax knowing their child is in a supportive environment.
