Near-Record Highs and Storms Loom Over Central Indiana Sunday
The weekend began with a pleasant start in central Indiana, as the sun shone brightly and temperatures climbed well above average, reaching the mid-70s for high temperatures. A passing warm front ensured that the night would remain unusually mild, with lows only dropping to around 60 degrees.
Most of Sunday will be marked by mostly sunny conditions, with temperatures expected to rise to 81 degrees across the area. This will mark the city of Indianapolis’ first 80-degree high of the year, just one degree short of the record high for the day. The current record high for Sunday is 82 degrees, which was set back in 1907.
As the day transitions into Sunday evening, a cold front is expected to approach the area, bringing the potential for a few strong-to-severe storms. At this time, the period of concern is from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., with the main threats being hail and strong, damaging winds.
However, the likelihood of strong-to-severe storms remains highly conditional. Given the warm temperatures expected, it is possible that some showers and isolated storms may develop ahead of the main storm line. If this happens, the chances of severe weather across the region could decrease significantly.
After the potential storm activity on Sunday, dry weather is expected to return as we move into early next week. The forecast shows mostly sunny to partly cloudy conditions, with high temperatures briefly cooling into the low 50s on Monday. Following this, another warming trend is expected to take hold for central Indiana.
