Kiwanis Club of Birmingham Gifts 1,000 Books to Preschoolers
Promoting Literacy Through Community Efforts
In the city of Birmingham, Alabama, a local organization is making significant strides in promoting literacy among young children. The Kiwanis Club of Birmingham has been actively involved in various initiatives aimed at encouraging reading and fostering a love for books in early education.
Kiwanis Reads Program
The Kiwanis Reads program is one of the club’s most notable efforts. Through this initiative, members of the club have been reading to hundreds of preschool children across different locations in the Birmingham area. These locations include Birmingham City Schools, local Head Start programs, PreSchool Partners, The Bell Center, United Ability, and the YWCA.
During March, club members read the book “Hi! Fly Guy” by Tedd Arnold to approximately 881 children spread across 19 different sites. A total of 933 copies of the book were donated to the 52 classrooms that the club visited. This donation not only helped the children build their school libraries but also allowed them to expand their home libraries as well.
Impact on Children
The goal of the Kiwanis Club is to inspire a lifelong love for reading in children. Honora Gathings, the Executive Director of the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham, emphasized the importance of literacy. She stated, “Reading opens the door to a world full of opportunities and possibilities.”
Gathings further highlighted the significance of the gift of literacy, saying, “The gift of literacy is one of the greatest gifts we can give to empower a child.”
Expanding the Reach
In addition to the Kiwanis Reads program, the club has also partnered with Mark Pettway, the Jefferson County Sheriff and a member of the club, for his Books Not Bullets program. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between law enforcement and youth in the community through literature. Recently, Kiwanis International President Michael Mulhaul and Kiwanis Club of Birmingham President Johan Saxton donated 200 books to the Books Not Bullets Initiative.
Recognition and Achievements
The efforts of the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham have not gone unnoticed. Last summer, the club was recognized by Kiwanis International for its Kiwanis Reads program with the 2025 Kiwanis International Signature Project Award. This recognition underscores the impact and effectiveness of the club’s initiatives in promoting literacy.
Conclusion
Through their dedication and community involvement, the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children. Their programs not only provide access to books but also inspire a passion for learning that can last a lifetime. As they continue their efforts, the club remains committed to fostering a culture of reading and education in the Birmingham community.
