Community Service and Generosity in Action
On March 17, Kyauna Parker and her classmates from the Early Childhood Education program at Macomb Community College participated in a meaningful community service event. They volunteered at Compassion Pregnancy Center in Fraser, a medical facility located in Eastpointe that supports individuals facing unplanned pregnancies.
Parker described the tasks her group would be handling during their visit. “Some of us will be sorting diapers, some of us will be going through baby clothes and help folding them and hanging stuff up, just getting them organized for the next time that they pass out donations,” she explained.
In addition to their on-site volunteer work, Parker and her classmates are also organizing a diaper and baby item donation drive. This initiative is set to run through March 31, with the goal of collecting essential supplies for parents and infants in need. Parker shared that she personally donated 20 packs of diapers, while her classmates created a wish list on Amazon to make it easier for others to contribute.
Before heading to the center on March 17, Parker and her classmates had already collected a significant amount of donations. They gathered 2,116 diapers along with additional baby items and clothing to give to the center. Their efforts didn’t stop there. One of her classmates reached out to Cuties, a diaper company, and successfully secured 1,400 diapers from the company.
Despite being an assignment for one of Parker’s classes, she emphasized that the project holds much deeper significance. “To give back to the community, to show support, because we are early childhood educators, to just help different organizations,” Parker said. She added, “It’s a big deal because families need assistance, they need the support.”
The initiative has been a great example of how students can use their skills and resources to make a positive impact. By combining classroom learning with real-world action, Parker and her classmates have demonstrated the importance of community involvement and generosity.
For those interested in supporting the cause, donations can be made online through the Amazon wish list created by Parker’s team. This provides a convenient way for individuals to contribute without having to physically visit the center.
