Group demands return of South LA teacher fired following student protest
Parents, students, and community members came together at a school board meeting on Saturday to demand the return of a teacher at Synergy Quantum Academy in South Los Angeles. The teacher, Ricardo Lopez, was recently fired, sparking outrage among those who believe he was unjustly terminated.
At the meeting, attendees chanted “bring back Mr. Lopez” as they voiced their support for the educator. Organizers claimed that Lopez was dismissed after he opened a locked campus gate during a recent walkout. The protest was organized by students who were upset about ICE raids in the area.
Ron Gochez, a teacher from LAUSD who attended the meeting, shared his perspective on the incident. He stated, “To protect his students, he did what any responsible adult would do when he’s seeing kids that are about to get hurt.” According to Gochez, Lopez acted out of concern for the safety of the students. “The principals chose not to do the correct thing, but he did. So instead of supporting a teacher who supports and protects his students, they terminated him.”

The school has denied these claims and provided its own statement regarding the situation. In a response to Eyewitness News, Synergy Quantum Academy said, “To date, the school has received no reports of student injuries related to student protests.”
Here is the full statement from the school:
“In early February, groups of students at Synergy Quantum Academy participated in student-led protests on campus. School administrators were present throughout to supervise students and prioritize safety. To date, the school has received no reports of student injuries related to student protests.
We respect students’ rights to express themselves and understand that moments like these often reflect deeply held concerns. Our responsibility as a school is to ensure that student expression happens in a way that protects students’ safety and complies with established campus protocols.
Families were notified, all students were accounted for, and counselors and support staff are available to students who wish to talk or need additional support.
Synergy Quantum Academy is a public charter school co-located on a Los Angeles Unified School District campus. Synergy works collaboratively with our District partners to follow the campus access and safety procedures set by LAUSD policy to ensure the safety of students from both schools. Decisions about whether students may leave campus during the school day are made solely by school administration, according to campus safety protocols.
We appreciate the partnership of our families and community as we continue to support our students, uphold their rights, and maintain a safe and orderly learning environment.”
The controversy surrounding Mr. Lopez’s termination highlights the ongoing debate between student safety, free expression, and school policies. While some believe that Lopez acted heroically, others argue that he violated established protocols. The situation has sparked discussions about the role of educators in protecting students during times of unrest and the responsibilities of school administrators in ensuring compliance with safety procedures.
Community members continue to advocate for transparency and fairness in how such incidents are handled. They emphasize the importance of supporting teachers who act in the best interest of their students, even when it means challenging institutional policies. As the conversation continues, the focus remains on the well-being of students and the need for clear communication between schools, families, and the broader community.
