Teacher Suspended After Expressing Love for Student
A Teacher’s Indefinite Ban from Teaching Due to Inappropriate Relationship with a Student
A teacher at a boarding school in East Sussex has been banned from teaching indefinitely after engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a student. The disciplinary panel determined that Benjamin Phelps, 31, committed serious misconduct by maintaining a romantic connection with a pupil at Bede’s School, located near Hailsham.
Phelps met with the student outside of class, hugged them, kissed them on the cheek, and sent messages that were deemed inappropriate. He also asked the student to skip school to “eat in the car” together. These actions led to a formal investigation into his conduct.
At the time of the incident, Phelps was serving as a deputy boarding housemaster, tutor, and performing arts technician at the senior school for students aged 13 to 18. He was dismissed in April 2024 following an investigation, and the Teaching Regulation Agency later struck him off the teaching register earlier this year. The agency released its report on the matter on Friday.
One of the messages Phelps sent to the student read: “I hope you’ve had a good night, I’m falling asleep with my phone in my hand. I love you and wish you sweet dream!! Contact me about anything xxxxxx.” Another message stated: “A hot feeling went through me, from front to back, I shook slightly (bit weird but true), then I had this warm glow and I can’t stop staring at it. I feel love, like pure love at a level I’m not sure I’ve felt before. This one feels special. (I’m so sorry for this but you want the truth) it properly turned me on.”
Another message from Phelps said: “I feel like there is not a single other thought in my brain, not one other than you.”
The relationship between Phelps and the student reached a critical point when the student attempted to kiss him in February 2024. According to the panel, Phelps did not reciprocate the kiss and tried to return their relationship to a more professional setting. However, he did not report the incident and admitted to the tribunal that there had been kisses on the cheek on occasion.
An allegation that Phelps pursued a “course of conduct akin to grooming” was not proven during the investigation.
