Snowmobile season officially kicks off in North Dakota

MINOT, ND (KXNET) — This week, more than 2,800 miles of groomed snowmobile trails opened across North Dakota. Snowmobile season officially kicked off on Dec. 1, with 13 trail systems now available for public use as long as their segments have at least four inches of packed snow.

Leaders at North Dakota Parks and Recreation encourage riders to download the Snowmobile North Dakota mobile app before taking to the trails, as some may not meet the necessary levels of snow for a safe riding experience.

“Many of our corridors currently lack some of that snow to do that grooming,” recreation chief Tony Hillig said. “It takes a plethora of volunteers to get out ahead of the opening date for snowmobile season, to get in there and mark all of the trails and the highway right-of-ways, to make sure we’re communicating with the private land owners that we have those leases on, getting equipment prepared to go out and do the grooming, a lot of the maintenance to get those back out of storage and make them ready.”

All 13 trail systems are set to remain open through April as long as the trail segments meet the four-inch minimum for packed snow.
