California Officials Warn About ‘Magic Mushroom’ Chocolate Risks
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued a warning to consumers, advising them not to consume TRE House brand “Magic Mushroom” gummies, chocolate bars, and syrups. The department has identified these products as containing illegal and potentially dangerous psychedelic compounds, which could lead to severe illness, hospitalization, or even death.
According to the CDPH, laboratory testing revealed that the products contain synthetic psychedelics, including an analogue of psilocin, which is classified as a Schedule I drug by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Additionally, the products were found to contain 4-Acetoxy-DET and, in most tested samples, 4-Acetoxy-DMT — both of which are illegal substances.
Health officials have raised concerns about the marketing of these products as food items, which could lead to confusion with candy or syrup. This poses a significant risk, especially for children who may mistake them for regular snacks. The CDPH also highlighted the potential for misuse, overuse, or dangerous interactions with medications, particularly when consumed without medical supervision.
Despite the warnings, no illnesses have been reported so far. However, the CDPH cautions that individuals seeking psychedelic mushroom products for perceived therapeutic benefits could face serious, life-threatening consequences by consuming these items.
The CDPH is currently investigating TRE House, a company based in Catsworth, California, along with its contract manufacturers. The products were labeled as containing a “Magic Mushroom Microdose Blend” and a “Proprietary Nootropic Mushroom Blend,” but laboratory tests revealed they contained synthetic psychoactive drugs.
The following TRE House products were found to be adulterated:
- Multiple flavors of gummies
- Chocolate bars
- Syrups
These products were sold at smoke shops and online, with distribution occurring throughout California and likely extending to other states. More than 1,000 pounds of TRE House gummies were embargoed and later voluntarily destroyed. Additional civil or criminal enforcement actions may follow, according to state health officials.
Consumers who experience adverse effects after using these products are urged to contact a healthcare provider immediately. Anyone who encounters these products for sale is encouraged to report them by calling the CDPH Complaint Hotline at 1-800-495-3232 or submitting a report through the CDPH Food and Drug Branch.
