DIY detangler hair spray
My daughter and I struggle with hair that easily tangles up. It is a constant struggle, so I knew I had to make a DIY detangler hair spray to help us out!
I used to dread brushing our hair because of the tears (hers) and frustration (mine). But everything changed once I started making this herbal detangler spray.
It’s now a part of our routine that feels gentle and a much better experience for us both. A few spritzes, a soft comb through, and we’re out the door without the struggle.
It’s one of those small wins that makes a big difference for my family, so I knew I had to share our simple homemade recipe with you!

Benefits of Marshmallow Root & Aloe Vera for Hair
While this recipe is simple, its ingredients offer great support for tangled, frizzy, or dry hair. It’s especially helpful for kids or anyone with sensitive scalps. This blend hydrates, soothes, and makes combing so much easier!
Marshmallow root is one of my go-to herbs for hair care. It has a slippery, mucilaginous texture that helps coat each strand in a protective layer. That silky coating locks in moisture, softens the hair, and smooths the cuticle.
This makes it so much easier to manage tangles, especially when my daughter’s hair turns into a rat’s nest after sleeping.
It also helps reduce breakage and frizz, which is such a relief when you’re trying to brush through knots without tears.
Aloe vera brings a soothing touch to both the scalp and the strands. It hydrates without being heavy or greasy. It adds a soft shine and helps restore balance to the scalp’s pH, something that’s often overlooked in everyday hair care.
It also calms down flyaways and leaves hair feeling smooth, healthy, and a little more manageable.
The essential oils, lavender and rosemary, are optional, but I almost always include them. Lavender offers gentle scalp support and adds a layer of calm to the process.
Rosemary brings a bit of invigorating energy and may help support circulation, which can benefit overall hair health.
Together, they make this spray smell fresh and clean, with just a hint of herbalism!

How to Make Homemade Detangler Spray
Here is how I made this herbal detangler spray. It should make around 8 ounces:
Ingredients
- 1 cup distilled water
- 1 Tbsp organic marshmallow root
- 1 Tbsp aloe vera gel
- 10 drops organic lavender essential oil (optional)
- 5 drops organic rosemary essential oil (optional)
- Preservative (optional; I used 29 drops Geogard ECT)

Instructions
In a small saucepan, combine the distilled water and marshmallow root. Bring to a gentle simmer and let it steep for about 30 minutes.

Strain the mixture to remove the herb, and let the marshmallow “tea” cool completely.

Mix the essential oils (if using) and preservative into the aloe vera gel.

Once the tea is cool, combine it with the aloe vera mixture and stir well.

Pour into a clean spray bottle, cap it, and give it a good shake.

To Use: Spritz evenly throughout your hair from root to tip, especially on frizz-prone areas. Use it on damp hair after a shower or to refresh dry hair throughout the day.
Notes
- If you add a preservative, your spray should stay fresh for a few months. Without it, store your bottle in the fridge and use it within one week.
- Any essential oils will work!
