Southington Launches New Diagnostic Classroom for Special Ed Expansion
Introduction to the New Diagnostic Classroom
Southington is taking a significant step forward in supporting students with complex learning and behavioral needs by establishing an elementary diagnostic classroom at South End School. This initiative aims to provide specialized assistance to students who require intensive assessments, allowing educators to determine the most suitable long-term educational placement for them.
Superintendent Steven Madancy highlighted that the district already has access to diagnostic placements through a collaboration with Farmington Valley. However, he pointed out that there is currently no comparable option for elementary students. When younger students need a diagnostic placement, schools often have to seek available seats in outside programs, which may not always be available or suited to the student’s specific needs.
The Benefits of the New Diagnostic Classroom
The new diagnostic classroom will be staffed by a full-time special education teacher, two applied behavior analysis therapists, and a full-time school psychologist. It is designed to serve students for a period of 4 to 6 weeks or 45 days, and it is not intended as a permanent placement. According to Madancy, this approach allows for focused instruction, programming, and support tailored to the student’s requirements.
The classroom will be funded by a grant from the state Special Education and Expansion Development program, which is aimed at enhancing special education services across the district. This funding ensures that the necessary resources are available to support students effectively.
Addressing Challenges in the Current System
Madancy noted that the district faces challenges when students in need of diagnostic placement must remain in their home school while waiting for an opening. During periods of crisis, support staff are often pulled from their regular caseloads to respond, which can impact services for other students. He explained that this situation can persist for some time, depending on how long it takes to address a student’s needs.
The new diagnostic classroom will also help assess students who are new to the district. Madancy mentioned that sometimes students are new to the district, and the school knows very little about them. Before making a decision on an appropriate program for them, the district wants to gather as much information as possible. This new classroom provides a structured environment to do that in various ways.
Supporting School Psychologists
Madancy also emphasized that the added staffing will help ease the workload for school psychologists, who are often overwhelmed with evaluations. When a psychologist is out on medical or maternity leave, the district has no substitutes, so the extra support will help keep services running smoothly.
Robert Brown, a member of the board of education, acknowledged that some parents had concerns this year about why their children were waiting for diagnostic placement. He stated that the new classroom is a step in addressing some of those concerns.
