Lincoln Fire and Rescue Shares Wildfire Photos, Warns Residents Against Burning During Red Flag Warning
LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Lincoln Fire and Rescue shared several photos of their experience with the western Nebraska wildfires on Saturday, and reminded residents to not burn any items during the Red Flag Warning.

Several LFR members returned from western Nebraska on Thursday, where four wildfires are still burning. The fire department has been actively involved in responding to the ongoing crisis, providing support and assistance to affected communities.
“While the situation was challenging, the experience, relationships built, and shared learning made a meaningful and positive impact, and we are proud to have been part of all Nebraskans coming together during this time,” an LFR spokesperson said. “Our thoughts remain with those still impacted, and with the responders who continue their efforts.”
The Red Flag Warning, issued by local authorities, indicates conditions that are favorable for rapid fire spread. During such times, it is crucial for residents to exercise caution and avoid any activities that could potentially start a fire. This includes burning trash, yard waste, or any other materials.
LFR reminded residents to be careful during the Red Flag Warning. Firefighters have responded to five calls on Saturday for fire, pits, and burning of trash in the backyard. These incidents highlight the importance of following fire safety guidelines, especially when weather conditions are conducive to fire spread.
Key Safety Tips from Lincoln Fire and Rescue
- Avoid outdoor burning: During a Red Flag Warning, it is best to avoid any form of open burning, including campfires, debris burning, or even small trash fires.
- Keep flammable materials away from structures: Ensure that dry grass, leaves, and other flammable materials are cleared from around homes, decks, and other structures.
- Have an emergency plan: Know the quickest escape routes from your home and have a communication plan in place with family members.
- Stay informed: Keep up-to-date with local weather conditions and fire alerts through official channels.
What Residents Can Do
Residents can take the following steps to help prevent wildfires:
- Report suspicious activity: If you see smoke or a fire, call 911 immediately.
- Use caution with equipment: Avoid using power tools or lawn mowers during high wind conditions, as they can spark a fire.
- Check local regulations: Some areas may have specific rules about burning, so it’s important to check with local authorities before starting any fire.
