Jason Momoa Evacuates as Devastating Storm Strikes Hawaii

Thousands have been ordered to flee as the archipelago faces its most intense surge of storms in two decades.

Key Points

Jason Momoa has been forced to evacuate the North Shore of Oahu as storms continue to ravage Hawaii. “I got my family with me. We got out of the North Shore,” he said in a now-expired Instagram story on Saturday. “We’re safe for now, but there’s a lot of people who weren’t, so we’re sending all our love.”

Hawaii is currently battling the most devastating weather event of the last two decades, with damages already estimated to exceed $1 billion. Jason Momoa and his family have evacuated his lifelong home of Oahu, as another severe storm barrels down on Hawaii.

“I got my family with me. We got out of the North Shore… our power went off… We’re safe for now, but there’s a lot of people who weren’t, so we’re sending all our love,” Momoa shared in a now-expired Instagram story, per PEOPLE. “The North Shore is pretty gnarly right now. So hopefully everyone’s safe and getting out… Stay safe out there.”

The mid-Pacific archipelago has been battered by an unceasingly brutal weather system for two weeks, causing some of the worst damage and flooding in decades. As a second intense storm descended on Oahu’s North Shore, the Aquaman star, who was born, raised, and has lived most of his life on the island, was forced to evacuate, he shared on Saturday.

Momoa also shared several other posts informing his nearly 17 million Instagram followers of the damage — and ways they can help impacted locals. The actor also posted a video Saturday that showed him and his girlfriend, Adria Arjona, helping deliver food prepared by the Hawaiian diner chain Zippy’s to those who have lost their homes and have otherwise evacuated.

“Aloha everyone, These past weeks have been heavy,” he wrote in the caption. “The storms, the flooding, the constant rain across O’ahu have affected so many of our people especially those already facing hardship. Seeing families displaced, communities struggling, and our unhoused neighbors hit the hardest.”

In other photos and video shared to his stories and grid alike, Momoa provided views of roads destroyed by storm surges, of driftwood and wreckage strewn across an Oahu beach, and of efforts to put together fundraisers.

Momoa was born in Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii and the state’s most populous city. Mayor Rick Blangiardi and other Honolulu officials issued evacuation orders for roughly 5,500 people late last week. They drew attention in particular to a 120-year-old dam in Honolulu that is under threat of failing, per AP.

In addition to the thousands evacuated, over 230 people have been rescued as Oahu faces what could surpass $1 billion in damage from the storms.

Momoa also advocated for the state and its embattled denizens back in 2023, when rampant wildfires laid waste to the island of Maui. “We are devastated and heartbroken for our friends and ‘ohana on Maui who [have] been impacted by the recent wildfires,” he wrote on Instagram at the time, urging his followers to donate to the relief effort.
