Oklahoma Wildfire Alert Lifted in Northwest, Ongoing Danger Remains

Several fires broke out on Sunday as the state experiences conditions that make wildfires more likely. Oklahoma is facing a high risk of fire due to specific weather patterns, and residents are being advised to stay alert.

High Fire Danger in Oklahoma

According to KOCO 5 Meteorologist Joseph Neubauer, a change in wind direction has increased the risk of wildfires across the state. This shift in winds creates an environment where fires can spread quickly, making it essential for people to be cautious and prepared.

Evacuation Order Lifted Near Camargo

At 2:45 p.m., the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management issued an evacuation order for a large and destructive wildfire near Camargo. Residents between E680 Road and EW 69 were told to leave the area immediately. However, by around 6:30 p.m., the evacuation order was lifted as crews worked to extinguish hotspots in the region.

A reunification center was established at 604 Main Street at the Vici Community Center, with the Leedey Community Building also open for evacuees. Local roads may have been affected by smoke and fire, so drivers should exercise caution if traveling through the area.

Dewey County Emergency Management reported that the Dewey County Task Force and districts 1 and 3 were responding to a major fire south of Vici. The fire was located west of Highway 34, between county roads 63 and 64, just before 3 p.m.

Southeast Oklahoma City Grass Fire

A grass fire in southeast Oklahoma City required air support to combat it on Sunday afternoon. A helicopter equipped with a Bambi Bucket was used to help put out the flames. At about 3:50 p.m., the Oklahoma City Fire Department responded to a large grass fire near Foster Road and Southeast 56th Street.

Fire Warning Near Dibble

A fire warning was issued until 4 p.m. for areas near Dibble and Criner. According to Joseph Neubauer, this fire is behind a cold front and is moving south at a speed of 3 to 5 mph.

Red Flag Warning Issued

A Red Flag Warning was issued for nearly all of Oklahoma until 9 p.m. Only southeast Oklahoma is not under this warning. The National Weather Service notes that gusty winds and low humidity are increasing the risk of fires across the state. Any new fires that start are expected to spread rapidly.

Oklahomans are urged to avoid any outdoor burning during this time to prevent additional fires from starting.
