Winter Storm Alert: 6 States Face 12 Inches of Snow and 60 mph Winds

Unusual Winter Weather Hits Multiple U.S. States

As spring officially begins in the United States, some regions are still experiencing harsh winter conditions. According to weather experts, six states are preparing for up to 12 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 60 mph. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued winter storm warnings and advisories across several states as the last cold blast of winter makes its final push before warmer weather arrives.

Hawaii, Alaska, and Northeastern States Face Heavy Snowfall

Hawaii, often associated with warm temperatures, is among the areas bracing for significant snowfall. The Big Island’s Summits are expected to see up to 10 inches of snow, with wind gusts as high as 60 mph. This storm is set to begin on Sunday, March 22, and continue into Monday, March 23. By the end of the storm, snow accumulation could reach up to 12 inches in some areas.

The NWS warns that travel during this time will be extremely difficult or even impossible. Blowing snow will reduce visibility significantly, sometimes to zero. They recommend postponing travel to the Summits until the storm passes.

Winter storm warnings indicate that “significant amounts of snow, sleet, and ice” are expected, along with strong winds. These conditions will make travel very hazardous or impossible.

In addition to Hawaii, other states such as Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont, and Alaska are also preparing for winter storms. These regions are expected to receive between a few inches to 12 inches of snow from various storm systems.

New York and Vermont Prepare for Challenging Conditions

New York State is particularly affected, with snow expected in higher elevations. A winter weather system is set to impact northern New York and the Adirondack region through Monday morning. The system will bring a mix of accumulating snow, rain, and freezing drizzle, creating difficult and potentially hazardous travel conditions.

In Vermont, the NWS predicts total snow accumulation between 3 and 7 inches, along with light ice accumulations. These conditions will likely lead to challenging driving and road maintenance situations.

Warmer Weather Expected Soon

Despite the ongoing winter weather, there is good news on the horizon. According to research from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), much warmer than usual weather is expected across most of the United States from March 29 through April 4. The only exception is the far Northeast, where colder temperatures may persist.

The first day of spring was on Friday, March 20, marking the official start of the warm season. However, it may not feel like it just yet. Following spring, the summer solstice will occur on Sunday, June 21, which is the astronomical beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.

Conclusion

While some parts of the U.S. are still dealing with the remnants of winter, the forecast indicates that warmer weather is on the way. Travelers should remain cautious in affected areas and stay updated with local weather reports. As the country transitions into spring and eventually summer, residents can look forward to more favorable weather conditions.
