Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association Halts Dog Intakes Amid Distemper Outbreak
Temporary Dog Intake Pause Due to Distemper Outbreak
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association (KCHA) has announced a temporary pause on accepting dogs for the next two weeks. This decision comes as a response to a surge in distemper cases within the shelter. According to a Facebook post released on Thursday, the pause will last through April 2, during which time the shelter will not accept routine dog or puppy intakes. However, emergency cases will still be accepted.
The shelter reported 11 confirmed cases of distemper in the past month, with an additional 13 dogs placed in isolation due to potential exposure. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for distemper, and the shelter has acknowledged that it may not be able to save all affected animals. Symptoms of distemper include nasal discharge, coughing, lethargy, fever, and neurological signs such as tremors and seizures.
What Should Pet Owners Know?
Those who have recently adopted or taken in a dog within the last two weeks are advised to remain vigilant. However, the shelter noted that it is unlikely that these pets have contracted the illness, especially if they were vaccinated. If a pet begins to show concerning symptoms, an appointment can be made for further evaluation.
The temporary pause is intended to allow the shelter to monitor the current situation more closely. It will provide an opportunity to assess how many of the existing pets are showing symptoms and to better manage their care. During this period, the shelter will continue to offer vaccines, dewormer, and flea/tick medication to any healthy strays.
Community Support and Vaccine Clinic
In addition to its ongoing services, KCHA is hosting a free vaccine clinic on March 31. This event is a valuable resource for pet owners looking to ensure their animals are up to date on essential vaccinations.
The shelter is also asking for community support in the form of pet supplies, cleaning supplies, and linens. These items will help maintain the cleanliness and comfort of the facility during this challenging time.
Continued Operations and Future Plans
Although the intake of new animals is temporarily suspended, the shelter remains committed to providing necessary care and resources to the local animal population. Once the two-week pause is complete, the KCHA will reassess the situation and determine whether further measures are needed.
For those interested in learning more about the shelter’s efforts or how to get involved, additional information can be found through local channels. The community’s support and understanding during this time are crucial in helping the shelter navigate this outbreak and continue its mission of protecting and caring for animals in need.
