Winter Storm Alert: Severe Weather Looms Over New England
Weather Forecast for Sunday and Monday
Sunday brings a day with average temperatures in the 40s. There will be some showers that develop midday, followed by a break in the weather. However, ongoing snow is expected in high terrain areas of northern New England.
As the cold front moves south on Sunday night, Boston and all of southern New England can expect scattered rain and snow showers. In fact, rain will pick up across southern New England during the afternoon and continue throughout the night. The region can expect between 0.5 to 1.5 inches of rainfall, with wet snowflakes mixing in. This precipitation will continue into Monday morning.
Winter storm warnings are in effect for parts of central New Hampshire and Maine through 2 a.m. on Monday, with up to 8 inches of snow possible in some areas. Winter weather advisories are also in place for parts of New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont until midnight on Sunday, with 3 to 6 inches of snow and ice accumulation expected.

The Monday morning commute will be slick outside of Interstate 495, where temperatures fall below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Most areas south and east of this region will stay above freezing, so only some grassy areas will see any snow accumulation through midday Monday. A coating to 2 inches of wet snow is possible along the Route 2 corridor and high elevations of the Berkshires.
During Monday evening, another burst of snow and some snow squalls will move in on the backside of a departing low-pressure system. These snow events will travel from north to south during late Monday. Eastern Massachusetts could pick up some coatings of snow, leading to an icy commute on Tuesday morning.

Weather Outlook for Midweek
There is a slight warm-up expected for midweek, with highs reaching the 40s on Tuesday and the 50s on Monday and Thursday. Scattered rain will move through on Friday morning, followed by another round of quiet weather going into next weekend. High temperatures will remain in the low 50s. However, there are no major warmups expected for the Northeast anytime soon.
