Measles Outbreak Spreads in Washtenaw County, Fourth Case Suspected
Measles Outbreak Spreads in Southeast Michigan
A measles outbreak is continuing to grow in Southeast Michigan, with a fourth suspected case reported by the Washtenaw County Health Department. This development highlights the ongoing efforts of health officials to contain the spread of the highly contagious disease.
The first case in this investigation was made public on March 11, and it was linked to travel to Florida. A measles outbreak is defined as three related cases within a specific area, and that threshold was reached on March 20. The three confirmed cases involve one adult and two children between the ages of 5 and 17.
The newly reported suspect case is an adult who was a close contact of the first case, according to Washtenaw County health officials. While the symptoms align with those of measles and there is a known exposure, confirmation will require laboratory testing results.
“We are announcing this suspect case immediately because the last day for exposed infants and pregnant or immunocompromised individuals to receive preventative IG (immune globulin) treatment is Monday,” said Juan Luis Marquez, MD, MPH, medical director with Washtenaw County Health Department.
Measles is considered a highly contagious disease that spreads through personal contact and airborne transmission. Health officials emphasize that it is preventable through vaccination. The current two-dose schedule is about 97% effective in preventing measles. According to guidelines from the Washtenaw County Health Department, the first vaccine dose is typically given around age 1, with the second dose administered around age 4.
The measles outbreak remains under investigation by several local and state health departments, including the Washtenaw County Health Department, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and the Wayne County Department of Health, Human and Veterans Services. Some of the known exposure locations have been previously reported, and now three additional sites have been added to the list.
These new exposure locations all occurred on March 17 and include:
- Crane Liberal Arts Building and Gunder Myron Building at Washtenaw County Community College in Ann Arbor
- Kroger store on Whittaker Road in Ypsilanti
