2025-2026: NYC’s Snowiest Winter in 11 Years
Spring has finally arrived in New York City after one of the most brutal winters the city has experienced in recent years. The season brought with it a mix of challenges and unforgettable moments, marking 2025-2026 as a winter that will be remembered for its extreme weather conditions.
The winter of 2025-2026 turned out to be the coldest and snowiest in 11 years. Between December 21 and March 20, the average temperature in Central Park was 31.9 degrees Fahrenheit. This was 4.3 degrees below the normal average, making it the coldest average temperature since the winter of 2014-2015. The harsh conditions were exacerbated by a weeks-long cold snap in January and February, which plunged the city into a deep freeze.
During this period, at least 19 people were found dead outside, with many of the deaths believed to be directly related to hypothermia. Additionally, at least seven others died primarily from hypothermia inside private homes. These tragic incidents highlight the severe impact of the cold on vulnerable populations.
New York City also saw an extraordinary amount of snowfall during the 2025-2026 winter. A total of 43.4 inches of snow fell, which is 13.6 inches above the normal average of 29.8 inches. The snowfall was particularly heavy during two major storms.
On January 25, a winter storm dumped over 1 foot of snow on parts of the city. Central Park recorded 10.6 inches, while Washington Heights received 14.9 inches. Just four weeks later, on February 22, another blizzard arrived, delivering 19.7 inches in Central Park. This storm ranked as the ninth biggest snowstorm in New York City history, dating back to 1869.
With winter now in the rearview mirror, the city can look forward to all the pleasures that spring has to offer. The arrival of warmer temperatures brings a sense of renewal and hope, as residents begin to enjoy outdoor activities, blooming flowers, and the vibrant energy that defines the city in the springtime.
