Black Family Wellness Expo Returns to Wichita for Second Year

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – The Black Family Wellness Expo made a return to Wichita on Saturday for its second year, focusing on raising awareness about both mental and physical health within the community.

The event was free and open to the public, featuring a variety of panels that addressed different topics relevant to men and women. In addition to the discussions, there were several free health screenings available to help improve access to medical care for residents.

More than 40 vendors participated in the expo, offering a wide range of resources and services designed to connect individuals with support systems. This was especially important for those who may not have health insurance or face barriers to accessing traditional healthcare.

“Maybe there’s a sliding scale, you know, maybe you have to pay 10 dollars for a visit,” said Dr. Anthony Shawn, a Wichita psychiatrist and panelist at the event. “So there’s a bunch of different opportunities and areas for people that might not have access to resources—they got resources from at this event.”

Organizers placed a strong emphasis on addressing overall well-being, including mental, physical, and emotional health. They aimed to provide something for every member of the family.

“Your mental health, your physical health, your emotional health. So we were looking at the whole family aspect, and we had something here for everyone,” said Carla Breckenridge, the chair of the Black Family Wellness Expo.

In addition to the health-related services, the event also included other unique offerings such as haircuts. These extra services added to the community-focused nature of the expo and helped make it more accessible and welcoming for all attendees.

Looking ahead, organizers are already planning for next year’s event, with the goal of making it even larger and more impactful. They hope to expand the number of vendors, increase participation, and continue to address the diverse needs of the community.

The Black Family Wellness Expo serves as an essential platform for promoting health equity and providing resources to those who may otherwise struggle to access them. By bringing together experts, service providers, and community members, the event fosters a sense of unity and shared purpose in improving health outcomes for all.

As the community continues to grow, events like the Black Family Wellness Expo play a crucial role in ensuring that no one is left behind when it comes to health and well-being.
