Flood Threat Triggers Evacuation Warnings in Maui
Residents in parts of Maui are being urged to prepare for potential evacuations as a Kona low continues to bring heavy rain and the risk of flooding. The Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has issued warnings for several areas, though these advisories are not mandatory evacuation orders.
The MEMA upgraded previous advisories to evacuation warnings at 4:49 p.m. on Saturday. These warnings are in effect due to the potential for flooding that could threaten life or property in the following locations:
- Malanai St. to Kahoma Stream in Lahaina
- ʻĪao Valley in Central Maui
- Some Wailuku River areas
- Parts of Kīhei in South Maui
Evacuation advisories remain in effect for:
- Wahikuli and Leialiʻi areas below Ka Laʻi Ola in Lahaina
- Nearby retention basins nearing capacity
County-contracted crews are working to redirect overflow and pump water from the Lahaina basin to keep levels safe. High-risk neighborhoods in South Maui and moderate-risk areas in ʻĪao, East Molokaʻi, and East Maui are also under watch.
Flood evacuations require moving to higher ground within your area. Residents should consider relocating to nearby shelters or elevated zones to avoid being stuck on crowded or fragile roadways.
Shelters are available at the following locations:
SOUTH MAUI
South Maui Community Park Gym – 1501 Līloa Drive, Kīhei (opened at 3 p.m.)
Kīhei Community Center – 303 E. Lipoa St., Kīhei (will open at 7 p.m.)
