HVAC Technicians in Wichita Face Surge in Service Calls Due to Extreme Heat
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – As temperatures hit record highs, residents in Kansas have been turning on their air conditioning units for the first time this year. This sudden demand has led to a hectic day for many heating and cooling companies in Wichita.
Workers at these companies report that they’ve received more calls than usual. John McCosh, who works with Eck Services, shared his experience: “Yeah, I mean, earlier today we were, they were actually asking people, like ‘hey do you have anyone else who wants to be on call,’ you know, willing to, you know, take some calls for us, cause we’re getting pretty busy.”
Dan Leet from Cook’s Heating and Cooling also noted the increased activity. “It’s been a busier day. We’re not near full-swing summer yet, but we get a few more days like this and we’ll be running full-tilt. Anytime we get over about 90. That’s when we start picking up.”
Leet explained that while some AC unit issues require more complex repairs, others are simple fixes that homeowners can handle. “Probably the main thing is air filters. People kind of forget about it throughout the holidays, and then come the first hot day of the season, the AC doesn’t wanna work. It’s just from lack of changing the air filters, lack of routine maintenance.”
Beyond just air filters, experts warn that neglecting to clean AC units can lead to a variety of problems. McCosh highlighted this issue: “They’ll end up needing to wash their units out, and they haven’t changed their filters, so their unit freezes up. So those are kind of just the most common things we see, you know, regarding HVAC systems failing.”
Sometimes, homeowners may think they have an issue with their AC, but the problem is simply a matter of patience. Leet advised, “Be patient. Cooling takes a lot longer than heating does. So if, you know, it’s five minutes after you’ve turned it on and you don’t feel cool, give it another hour or two.”
Common AC Issues and Solutions
Here are some of the most frequent problems homeowners face with their air conditioning systems:
- Dirty air filters: This is one of the most common causes of AC inefficiency. Filters should be changed regularly to ensure proper airflow.
- Clogged AC units: Failing to clean the outdoor unit can lead to reduced efficiency and potential system failure.
- Thermostat issues: A malfunctioning thermostat can cause the AC to run inefficiently or not at all.
- Low refrigerant levels: If the AC isn’t cooling properly, it could be due to a refrigerant leak.
- Electrical problems: Faulty wiring or a tripped circuit breaker can prevent the AC from operating.
Tips for Maintaining Your AC System
To keep your air conditioning running smoothly during the hotter months, consider the following tips:
- Change air filters regularly – ideally every 1-3 months, depending on usage.
- Clean the outdoor unit – remove debris and check for any obstructions that might hinder airflow.
- Check the thermostat – make sure it’s set correctly and functioning properly.
- Schedule professional maintenance – a yearly inspection by a qualified technician can catch potential issues before they become major problems.
- Monitor energy usage – high energy bills can indicate an inefficient system that needs attention.
By taking these steps, homeowners can avoid costly repairs and ensure their AC systems operate efficiently throughout the summer.
