Healthcare professionals often face long and demanding work hours, but one nurse from Arkansas recently shared a striking example of just how exhausting those shifts can be. On TikTok, user Sydney (@_.ssydney) posted a video capturing the moment she returned home after what turned out to be a 17-hour shift. The footage shows her arriving at her front door, visibly drained and struggling to unlock it with her hospital badge instead of her key.

In the caption, Sydney joked about the experience, writing: “Don’t let me work a 17-hour shift no more…goodnight y’all.” The video quickly gained attention, receiving over 7.7 million views and 1.4 million likes on TikTok. Viewers were shocked by the physical toll that such long hours can take on healthcare workers.

While Sydney’s shift may seem extreme, long and irregular hours are common in the healthcare industry. According to research, physicians in the United States work an average of 50.8 hours per week, compared to 40.7 hours for other workers. More than 40% of physicians report working 55 hours or more weekly. Nurses and other hospital staff also frequently work extended or overnight shifts, especially during staffing shortages.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has found that shift work and long hours can severely disrupt sleep patterns. Over half of night-shift healthcare workers report sleeping six hours or fewer per day, which is below the seven hours recommended by sleep experts. Sleep deprivation can lead to impaired concentration, slower reaction times, memory issues, and an increased risk of injury, including car accidents while commuting home.

Studies published in the Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety have shown that healthcare workers who work shifts longer than 12 hours face significantly higher risks of fatigue-related errors and occupational injuries. For Sydney, the 17-hour shift was clearly taking a toll. She seemed well aware of the risks, noting in her caption that this would be her “last 17-hour shift for a while.”

The video sparked a strong response online, with over 4,800 comments. Many viewers praised Sydney’s dedication, while others expressed sympathy for her exhaustion. One comment read: “pls tell me you had a day off after this shift.” Another wrote: “drove home on muscle memory and a prayer.” Some questioned why such extreme exhaustion has become normalized, with one person saying, “This shouldn’t be normal. I’m sorry and thank you for what you do.”

Another viewer summed it up simply: “Scanning into home is crazy.” The clip highlighted the real-life challenges that healthcare workers face daily, and the growing concern about the impact of long shifts on their health and safety.
