Former Yankees Reliever Joins Arizona Diamondbacks’ Opening Day Roster

Jonathan Loaisiga, a former right-handed reliever for the New York Yankees, has reportedly secured a spot on the Arizona Diamondbacks’ opening day roster. This news comes from a recent report by ESPN’s Jorge Castillo. At 31 years old, Loaisiga signed with Arizona on a non-roster invite this offseason and was expected to fill a role in the team’s undermanned major league bullpen.

Loaisiga has been a valuable asset during his time with the Yankees. Over the course of his eight MLB seasons with the team, he has maintained a 3.54 ERA and a 3.86 FIP. He has recorded eight saves and 41 holds, making him one of the more effective back-end relievers in baseball when healthy. However, maintaining his health has been a challenge throughout his career.

Loaisiga expressed his preference for high-leverage situations, stating, “That’s what I like.” He added, “I come from a team that’s put me in those high leverage situations, so hopefully I get the opportunity to do that here as well.”

During the offseason, Loaisiga had several options available to him but ultimately chose Arizona due to the similarities in weather between the Phoenix area and his home country of Nicaragua.

“I heard really good things across the board, everything from the weather, the climate that really suited me well, I heard good things about the coaching staff, the medical staff, and that’s really what guided me here,” Loaisiga said.

He continued, “I think it’ll be a good fit for me, it’s a young team, talented team, and I hope I can help them out.”

The key question surrounding Loaisiga is whether he can remain healthy. Over the last three seasons, he has missed significant time due to injuries. However, he has been injury-free during spring training and appears ready for the 2026 season.

There has been no decline in his velocity. During spring training, he consistently threw his two-seam fastball in the 97-98 mph range, reaching as high as 99.6 mph multiple times in his most recent appearance.

In seven Cactus League innings, Loaisiga has posted a 3.86 ERA with seven strikeouts and just two walks. While veteran Paul Sewald is likely to retain the closer role for Arizona, Loaisiga’s performance could position him as a key contributor if he remains on the field.

With his strong arm and experience, Loaisiga has the potential to become one of the most impactful relievers on Arizona’s pitching staff. His ability to stay healthy will be crucial in determining how much of an impact he can make in the 2026 season.
