Colossal Biosciences Secures $60 Million Investment for Global Conservation Initiative
Colossal Biosciences, a biotech startup based in Dallas, has recently announced a significant development: it has secured a $60 million investment from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This funding marks the beginning of the company’s BioVault conservation initiative, which aims to protect and preserve genetic material from endangered species. The announcement was made during the World Governments Summit in Dubai, where the Museum of the Future will permanently house both the BioVault and Colossal’s World Preservation Lab.
The BioVault is designed as a global repository for living cell lines and genetic data. Its goal is to store millions of samples representing over 10,000 species, with an initial focus on 100 species that are critically endangered but not currently preserved elsewhere. This project is seen as a modern-day equivalent of Noah’s Ark, offering a “backup plan for life on Earth.”
A Visionary Partnership
Ben Lamm, co-founder and CEO of Colossal, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership. He stated, “The UAE’s deep commitment to innovation, conservation, and technological advancement is truly inspiring.” Lamm emphasized that previous bio-banking efforts have been underfunded and lacked the necessary international collaboration. With the support of the UAE, Colossal is now creating the world’s first Colossal BioVault, which he described as an unprecedented global resource for protecting and restoring biodiversity.
The UAE’s investment, directed by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the crown prince of Dubai, brings Colossal’s total funding to over $600 million. This substantial financial backing underscores the UAE’s commitment to advancing science and environmental protection.
Expanding the Mission Globally
The Museum of the Future installation in Dubai is the first location of the BioVault, but there are plans for more facilities around the world. Colossal is actively seeking partnerships with other countries to expand the initiative. In the past year, the company has already expanded into Australia through a collaboration with the University of Melbourne.
According to Majed Al Mansoori, executive director of the museum, the initiative will prioritize fieldwork and DNA research across species in its first year. The installation will begin construction soon and is expected to be completed by 2027.
Educational and Research Hub
In addition to being a fully operational research environment, the BioVault and World Preservation Lab will serve as an interactive educational experience. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the importance of biodiversity and the innovative technologies used in conservation efforts.
The Museum of the Future, which opened in 2022, is known for showcasing technological developments and innovation. Its concept takes visitors on a journey to the year 2071, emphasizing the potential future of human progress and scientific discovery.
