A Journey of Recovery and Gratitude

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, a West Virginia National Guardsman who was shot in Washington, D.C., back in November 2025, recently shared his gratitude to everyone supporting him on Tuesday. This marked the first social post made by him since the shooting, highlighting his ongoing journey of recovery.

Sgt. Wolfe is still recovering from the incident that left him seriously injured and resulted in the tragic death of fellow WV National Guardsman Spc. Sarah Beckstrom. Despite the challenges, friends and family report that his recovery is progressing well.

“I’m grateful to be alive. Thank you for your prayers and support. It’s all been overwhelming and I’m trying still and determined. It’s been hard to go through something like this. Thank you for everything,” Sgt. Wolfe said in a Facebook post.

A New Normal

Sgt. Wolfe’s mother, Melody Wolfe, shared her own perspective on her son’s recovery. In her post, she mentioned that he has “settled into a new normal over the past 6 weeks” while undergoing treatment at an in-patient rehab facility. She also revealed that he will soon begin eight to 12 weeks of residential rehab, which is a crucial step in his rehabilitation process.

Melody also shared some updates regarding future medical procedures. Sgt. Wolfe is scheduled to undergo cranioplasty in early March. This procedure is expected to help him gain more independence and improve his overall recovery.

Challenges in Recovery

One of the developments in Sgt. Wolfe’s recovery is aphasia, a language disorder that affects his ability to communicate effectively. Melody explained that this condition makes it difficult for Andrew to express the words he wants to say. Despite these challenges, the support from loved ones and the community continues to play a vital role in his healing process.
