Experts: Missouri Residents Overlook Health Benefits
Understanding Health Insurance in Missouri
As the new year begins, many residents of Missouri are still grappling with confusion about their health insurance. This uncertainty can lead to financial strain and a lack of access to necessary medical care. Experts warn that without a clear understanding of health plans, individuals may miss out on valuable benefits.
Deb Rambo, an insurance producer in Missouri who specializes in Medicare, frequently encounters this issue among seniors. She notes that many people are unaware of the coverage they have and the services available to them. For example, when she meets with an individual and reviews their benefits, they might mention needing dental care. However, they often don’t realize that such coverage is already part of their plan.
“Sometimes they say, ‘Well, I need to go to the dentist,’ and I respond by asking if they know they have that coverage this year,” Rambo explained. “They often reply, ‘No, nobody told me that.'”
Rambo emphasizes the importance of insurance agents following up with seniors to ensure they fully understand their plans. This proactive approach can help prevent the loss of essential benefits. Additionally, information about health plans is available through various channels, including health plan websites, employer benefits offices, or by calling the number on the back of an insurance card.
A National Issue
Confusion over health plans and benefits is not unique to Missouri. Research indicates that only about one in four adults feel confident they understand their coverage well enough to use it effectively. This lack of knowledge can result in unexpected costs and inadequate care when it’s needed most.
Amy Jordan, vice president for consumer experience and engagement at UnitedHealthcare, highlights the importance of thoroughly understanding one’s health plan. She explains that this understanding should occur when the plan is first purchased and when the plan year begins. This way, individuals can be prepared for any medical needs that arise.
“There’s a lot of different resources that you can tap into that people oftentimes aren’t thinking about,” Jordan said. These resources include online tools, customer service representatives, and local community programs that can provide guidance and support.
Tips for Navigating Health Insurance
Experts recommend several strategies to help individuals better navigate their health insurance. First, reviewing benefits early in the year can help identify any gaps or misunderstandings. This review allows individuals to make informed decisions about their healthcare needs.
Using in-network providers is another important tip. In-network providers have agreements with the insurance company, which typically means lower out-of-pocket costs for the insured. By choosing these providers, individuals can save money and avoid unexpected expenses.
Additionally, taking advantage of preventive and mental-health services included in many health plans is crucial. These services can help detect and address health issues before they become more serious. Preventive care, such as vaccinations and screenings, is often covered at no cost, making it an essential part of any health plan.
By staying informed and utilizing available resources, individuals can better manage their health insurance and ensure they receive the care they need. With the right knowledge and support, navigating the complexities of health insurance becomes more manageable, leading to better health outcomes and financial stability.
