Pet Owner Confronts Unnecessary Surgery in Selma That Left Dog Suffering
A Veterinarian’s License Revoked After Unnecessary Surgeries on Pets
FRESNO, Calif. – A veterinarian in Selma has lost his license after the California Veterinary Medical Board determined that he performed surgeries on pets without any medical necessity. The case has sparked outrage among pet owners, with one affected owner finally coming forward to share their story.
Eric Garcia, a local resident, recalls how ten years ago, the owner of South County Veterinary Hospital told him that his dog, Mister Tillman, needed surgery on his hind legs. At the time, Garcia believed it was a routine procedure and did not question the recommendation.
However, after the surgery, Garcia noticed something was wrong. He took Mr. Tillman to another veterinarian, who informed him that the operation was unnecessary. “I just thought it was a normal surgery,” said Garcia, expressing his initial confusion.
In 2015, Garcia was once again advised by veterinarian Rodney Hatayama that his dog required surgery on his back legs. This time, the outcome was even more devastating. Garcia realized that something was seriously wrong and sought a second opinion. What he learned was shocking — the surgery had caused significant harm, and Mr. Tillman would need three additional procedures to try to fix the damage. Unfortunately, there was little that could be done to reverse the effects.
“He will shake uncontrollably sometimes, and I think it’s because of pain,” said Garcia, describing the ongoing struggles his beloved pet faces.
Garcia decided to file a complaint with the California Veterinary Medical Board, hoping for some form of justice. However, the process took over a decade, during which he waited for answers and accountability.
The wait finally came to an end earlier this year when Garcia received a call from the state. It turned out that Hatayama had agreed to surrender his license after the board found his actions violated professional regulations. Garcia explained that his goal was never revenge, but rather to hold the veterinarian accountable for his actions.
Despite the challenges, Mr. Tillman is still going strong. As of this year, he is about to turn 15 and remains Eric’s closest companion. The bond between them has only grown stronger through the trials they’ve faced together.

This case highlights the importance of thorough research and seeking multiple opinions when it comes to the health of our pets. It also serves as a reminder of the critical role that regulatory bodies play in ensuring the safety and well-being of animals under the care of professionals.
