Mystery Science Theater 3000: Rifftrax and Shout! Studios Bring Back Cult Classic

Exciting News for MST3K Fans

A new chapter is about to begin for fans of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” (MST3K). RiffTrax, the comedy troupe known for their humorous commentary on bad movies, has announced a collaboration with Shout! Studios to produce four new episodes of the iconic show. This exciting development comes as RiffTrax launches a Kickstarter campaign to fund the project and keep fans updated on the production process.

The new episodes, titled “Mystery Science Theater 3000: The RiffTrax Experiments,” will be led by the original MST3K stars Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett. These three have been central figures in the RiffTrax brand since 2006, and they will return to their roles as Mike Nelson, Tom Servo, Professor Bobo, Crow T. Robot, and Brain Guy. Additionally, Mary Jo Pehl, who played Pearl Forrester in the original series, will make a comeback.

Nelson shared his excitement about the project, saying, “Getting a chance to revisit ‘MST’ after all this time has really energized all of us at RiffTrax. And for my part, hey, I truly did miss standing next to plastic puppets. It’s been too long.”

The Kickstarter Campaign

The Kickstarter campaign is now live and will run through March 16. While the goal is to raise $20,000 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of RiffTrax, the episodes will be produced regardless of the fundraising total. This ensures that fans can look forward to the new content without any uncertainty.

The four movies that will be featured in the new episodes will be revealed throughout the campaign. Production will take place in Minneapolis, where the original show was filmed, and the episodes are expected to be released later this year on RiffTrax’s website. In keeping with the spirit of MST3K, the producers have committed to using the same kind of affordable practical sets and props that made the original show famous.

A Strategic Partnership

Matt Arsulich, associate vice president of product management at Shout! Studios, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We’re excited to join forces with RiffTrax as Mike, Kevin, and Bill return to the Satellite of Love for a new chapter of ‘MST3K.’ This partnership reinforces our dedication to growing valuable entertainment properties by serving their fandoms with high-quality storytelling.”

A Legacy of Comedy

Nelson, Corbett, and Murphy have been performing under the RiffTrax banner since 2006. Over the years, they have riffed over 1,000 short films, major blockbusters, and more. They also frequently host RiffTrax live screenings, where they perform in front of an audience.

This new installment of MST3K comes just two weeks after it was reported that original series creator Joel Hodgson had sold his joint interest in the show to Radial Entertainment, the parent company of Shout! Studios. Hodgson had previously spearheaded the revival of the show for an 11th season in 2015, which raised approximately $6.3 million through a successful Kickstarter campaign.

The 11th and 12th seasons were released on Netflix, while a 13th season was available on the MST3K online streaming platform called The Gizmoplex. Corbett, Murphy, and Pehl appeared onscreen in the revival, with Pehl also contributing as a writer on multiple episodes.

The Origins of MST3K

“MST3K,” which first aired on a Minneapolis UHF station in 1988, featured Hodgson and later Nelson along with two robot sidekicks as they provided hilarious commentary on cheesy B-movies. The show eventually moved to Comedy Central and concluded its run on the Sci-Fi Channel (now Syfy) in 1999 after 197 episodes. A feature film, “Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie,” which riffed the sci-fi classic “This Island Earth,” was released in 1996.
