Kamin Science Center Nominated for Top U.S. Museum in USA Today’s 10Best
Pittsburgh’s Kamin Science Center Nears Top Spot in National Recognition
Pittsburgh is making waves with its Kamin Science Center, which is currently among the top contenders for being named the best science museum in the country. The recognition comes through USA Today’s 10Best online poll, where visitors can cast their votes for the nation’s favorite science museum. The Kamin Science Center has been steadily climbing the rankings and is currently sitting near the top of the list.
Located on Pittsburgh’s North Shore, the Kamin Science Center offers a wide array of exhibits and experiences that appeal to visitors of all ages. The museum is known for its Buhl Planetarium, which provides an immersive look into the cosmos. It also features the BodyWorks exhibit, allowing guests to explore the human body in a fun and interactive way. Another highlight is the Robot Hall of Fame, which celebrates the history and innovation of robotics.
“Formerly known as the Carnegie Science Center, it’s home to five levels of fun exhibits, as well as the Rangos Giant Cinema,” according to USA Today. “The museum hosts dozens of events all year round dedicated to all aspects of science.”
In late 2023, the Kamin Science Center unveiled a new exhibit called Sports360. This hands-on experience combines the excitement of sports with the principles of science, offering visitors a unique opportunity to learn while having fun. The exhibit is designed to engage people who are passionate about sports, especially in a city like Pittsburgh, where sports culture runs deep.
“People love sports so much here in Pittsburgh that it seemed like a no brainer that we would also highlight the science and technology in sports,” said Jason Brown, director of the Kamin Science Center and vice president of Carnegie Museums. “Sports360 is a perfect example of how we bring science to life through real-world applications.”
Online voting for the USA Today 10Best poll is open until 12 p.m. on Monday, February 9. Each person can vote once per day, giving supporters of the Kamin Science Center multiple opportunities to help it climb the rankings. The winning museums will be announced on Wednesday, February 18.
As of early Monday morning, the Kamin Science Center was listed third in the online poll rankings, showing strong support from voters across the country.
Other Pittsburgh Museums in the Running
In addition to the Kamin Science Center, another Pittsburgh institution, the Moonshot Museum, is also part of the online poll. Located on Pittsburgh’s North Side, the Moonshot Museum is situated at the headquarters of Astrobotic, a company focused on space exploration. The museum is dedicated to the space industry and features interactive exhibits that cover topics such as the construction of lunar spacecraft and simulated lunar missions.
The Moonshot Museum is currently ranked ninth in the voting as of early Monday morning, demonstrating its growing popularity among voters. With its focus on space technology and innovation, the museum brings a unique perspective to the competition.
Both the Kamin Science Center and the Moonshot Museum reflect the vibrant scientific and technological spirit of Pittsburgh. As the online poll continues, both institutions have the chance to gain national recognition and inspire future generations of scientists, engineers, and explorers.
