Jack Schlossberg Speaks Out About Sister’s Tragic Passing at 35
A Life of Resilience and Love
Tatiana Schlossberg, a vibrant and passionate woman, passed away at the age of 35 on December 30 due to acute myeloid leukemia. Her death marked the end of a courageous battle against cancer, but her legacy continues to inspire those who knew her.
Just a week after her passing, on January 5, Tatiana’s funeral was held in New York City at The Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola. This location holds special significance as it was also where her grandmother, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, was laid to rest in 1994. During this solemn occasion, her younger brother, Jack Schlossberg, honored her memory by sharing heartfelt quotes on Instagram.
Jack’s tribute included several powerful messages, including one from Tatiana herself. In her 2019 book Inconspicuous Consumption, she wrote, “It’s up to us to create a country that takes seriously its obligations to the planet, to each other, and to the people who will be born into a world that looks different than ours has for the last 10,000 years or so.” She emphasized the importance of hard work and making a difference, even if the results may not be immediate.
In addition to Tatiana’s words, Jack shared quotes from notable figures such as President John F. Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln, Buddha, and Robert Frost. He concluded his tribute with a nostalgic photo of him and Tatiana, capturing a moment of joy and connection between siblings.
A Journey Through Illness
The month before her death, Tatiana shared her personal journey with cancer in an essay published in The New Yorker. In it, she reflected on her diagnosis, writing, “I did not—could not—believe that they were talking about me. I had swum a mile in the pool the day before, nine months pregnant. I wasn’t sick. I didn’t feel sick. I was actually one of the healthiest people I knew.”
Her essay revealed the emotional and physical challenges she faced, as well as the unwavering support from her family. She spoke of her brother Jack, stating, “My brother was a half-match, but he still asked every doctor if maybe a half-match was better, just in case.” This dedication highlighted the deep bond between them and the strength of their relationship.
Tatiana also expressed her gratitude for her parents and sister, who helped care for her children during her illness. “They have held my hand unflinchingly while I had suffered, trying not to show their pain and sadness in order to protect me from it,” she wrote. Despite the pain, she acknowledged that this support was a gift, even though it brought her daily sorrow.
A Family Legacy
Tatiana was the daughter of Caroline Kennedy and Edwin Schlossberg, and she leaves behind two young children: son Edwin, aged 3, and daughter Josephine, aged 1. Her story is intertwined with a family history marked by both love and loss.
Caroline Kennedy, who lost her father, John F. Kennedy, at a young age, also experienced the tragedy of losing her mother to cancer and her younger brother, John F. Kennedy Jr., in a plane crash. Now, she faces the heartbreak of losing her daughter, Tatiana.
A friend of the Kennedy family shared insights about the challenges ahead for Caroline. “Caroline is going to have to do for Tatiana’s children what Jackie had to do for her children—keep the memory alive of their parent that they might not remember,” the friend said. “It’s tragic, and she has a playbook.”
The friend continued, “What I know of Caroline is that she will carry Tatiana’s memory for the rest of her life. She will make sure that Tatiana is remembered, and that’s a gift, to have a family like that.”
