Halle Berry Urges Newsom to Act on Women’s Issues Before 2028

Halle Berry’s Strong Words for California Governor Gavin Newsom

Academy Award-winning actress Halle Berry has taken a bold stance against California Governor Gavin Newsom, expressing her frustration over his repeated vetoes of the Menopause Care Act. At 59 years old, Berry has become a prominent advocate for women navigating menopause and related health challenges. Her efforts have led to the creation of Respin, a health company focused on supporting women during this critical phase of life.

Berry’s criticism of Newsom intensified after he vetoed the Menopause Care Act for the second time in November. This bipartisan legislation aimed to improve access to menopause care and enhance clinician education on the subject. Newsom justified his decision by stating that the bill’s “expansive coverage mandate, in conjunction with a prohibition on utilization management, is too far-reaching.” He argued that health plans use utilization management to ensure patients receive the right care at the right time, especially when dealing with new and emerging treatments.

In December, Berry voiced her concerns more strongly at a New York Times “DealBook” summit, accusing Newsom of “devaluing” women in midlife. She highlighted that the governor had vetoed the menopause bill twice, emphasizing that such actions reflect a lack of support for half the population.

“Back in my great state of California, my very own governor, Gavin Newsom, has vetoed our menopause bill, not one, but two years in a row,” Berry stated before Newsom spoke. “But that’s OK, because he’s not going to be governor forever, and the way he has overlooked women, half the population, by devaluing us, he probably should not be our next president either. Just saying.”

Newsom responded to Berry’s comments at Newark International Airport shortly after the summit, according to TMZ. He mentioned that he had spoken with her manager and was working to reconcile their differences. “It’s included in the budget next year. She didn’t know that,” he said.

However, Berry clarified in an interview with The Cut published Monday that she had not heard back from Newsom. She expressed disappointment, stating, “It’s disturbing when people say they’re going to do things and then they don’t.” Berry added, “But he heard what I said. If he is going to run to be our next president, he can’t sleep on women. Wake up, Gavin.”

Newsom’s office described Berry’s comments as “very unfortunate.” A spokesperson for the governor told the New York Post that the proposal put forward today to support menopause care through the state budget aligns with what he had previously stated in his veto message on AB 432.

The proposed measure would require health plans and insurers to cover FDA-approved menopause treatments, including hormone replacement therapy and nonhormonal medication. This requirement would apply to new or renewed policies after July 1.
