Home Health Aide Charged in Flagler County Theft Case
A Home Health Aide Arrested for Stealing from a Senior
On December 31, deputies from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office arrested a home health aide for allegedly stealing cash and a debit card from a senior citizen under her care. The suspect, Katie Swain, 32, of Pomona Park, was taken into custody after a month-long investigation into unauthorized purchases made with a stolen debit card.
The incident came to light when a senior resident at HarborChase of Palm Coast noticed several unauthorized transactions on his bank statements. He also discovered that he was missing cash and a debit card from his wallet. Detectives later determined that Swain had been a care provider for the victim on the day the items went missing.
Investigators found that most of the fraudulent transactions were made near Swain’s residence in Putnam County. Security camera footage from local stores showed Swain using the stolen card to make purchases. According to the sheriff’s office, Swain used the victim’s card to make $664.02 in fraudulent transactions and stole $30 in cash.
Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly commented on the case, stating, “This woman abused her position of trust and authority as a home health aide for gas, donuts and trinkets. She stole from a senior that trusted her and used his debit card as her own, but luckily for her, there are plenty of snacks she can buy with her own money from the commissary at the Green Roof Inn.”
Swain is now facing charges of fraudulent use of personal identification information and grand theft from a person over 65 years of age. She was released from jail on a $10,000 bond.
