Sumter Venue Boosts Security After Weekend Shooting

A shooting that occurred over the weekend at a Sumter event venue resulted in one man being injured and led to the implementation of new safety policies. These changes are designed to enhance security and restrict the types of events that can be held at the location moving forward.

The Silver Spoon Event Center announced these updates after a shooting incident took place early on Sunday, December 28. According to the Sumter Police Department, officers were called to the venue around 2 a.m. Upon arrival, they found a 30-year-old man outside with a gunshot wound. Authorities believe the incident occurred inside the event center. The victim has not been cooperative with the ongoing investigation. He was taken to a hospital for treatment, and his injuries are described as non-life-threatening.

Silver Spoon CEO David Witherspoon stated that the new policies focus on safety and security, as well as limiting the types of events allowed at the venue. He mentioned that these changes align with new policies approved by the Sumter City Council for special event facilities.

“We are putting strict measures in place with safety measures,” he said. “We have a 24-hour surveillance camera now working with the police department, and we are doing elegant events that we have in the background. We’ve been here for seven years, and we had thousands of events, and this was an isolated event, and we know this will never happen again.”

Among the additional changes now in effect are:

  • Allowing only theme-based events
  • Implementing armed security monitoring
  • Introducing a stricter vetting process for future renters
  • Reducing party sizes from 200 to 120
  • Limiting seating to 50 people in the main room
  • Enforcing new time restrictions

“Ending at 12, so we have two times: we have 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and then, now we’re going to cut off from 5 p.m. to 12 a.m., so you should be finished by 11:30 and out by 12.”

Sam Spencer, a former renter and Sumter resident, expressed understanding of the decision despite the new policies potentially limiting certain events.

“That’s the first time I’ve ever heard of anything happening there, so now that he is even more strict about who rents it and the policies that have been written in, I think it’s going to be a good thing for Sumter and a great thing for Sumter,” Spencer said.

Individuals interested in booking or learning more about the updated policies can find additional information on the Silver Spoon Event Center’s website.

Venue officials also mentioned that another event facility has recently opened in Sumter, located at 921 Carolina Avenue, named Infinity Event Center or Silver Spoons 2. This provides residents with more options for hosting events.
