Every Serve Matters: Metro Pickleball Tournament Supports Children in Need
Overland Park, Kan. – A local pickleball tournament in the metro area managed to raise significant funds for three children’s charities over the weekend, with all proceeds directly benefiting kids in need. The event, known as the Year 4 The Kids Kickoff Classic Pickleball Tournament, took place on Saturday, January 3, and brought together players of all ages and skill levels.
The Armourdale Renewal Association organized the single-day event, which was more than just a sporting competition. It served as a powerful demonstration of community support for children facing difficult circumstances. All the money raised from the tournament went to three specific organizations: the Armourdale Renewal Association, the Shadow Buddies Foundation, and the Shawnee Lodge Children’s Initiatives. These groups focus on helping children who are sick, underserved, or dealing with significant challenges.
“This is more than a sporting event,” said organizers. “It’s a community coming together to change the start of a child’s year.”
The grassroots tournament was made possible through the efforts of volunteers and local small businesses. Every match played during the event contributed directly to youth programs, enrichment opportunities, and essential resources for families. This collaborative effort highlighted the strong sense of community and shared purpose among participants and supporters.
Mary Postlethwait, CEO of the Shadow Buddies Foundation, explained the mission of her organization:
“Not only are they going through the situation, but their buddy is a companion that goes through it with them,” Postlethwait said. “We have a little heart buddy with an incision down the chest and a mended heart. So, our main goal is that we want these kids to understand they’re not alone, they’re not by themselves and they always have a shadow buddy by their side.”
The event took place at SERV in Overland Park, where attendees gathered to support a cause that touches the lives of many children and their families.

Impact of the Tournament

The involvement of volunteers and local businesses ensured that the event was both accessible and impactful.
The Shadow Buddies Foundation, in particular, emphasized the emotional support provided to children undergoing medical treatments. This kind of support can make a significant difference in a child’s experience and recovery.
