Evangeline Lilly Reveals Brain Damage from Traumatic Injury

Months after sharing the story of her fall into a boulder, Evangeline Lilly has revealed that she suffered brain damage as a result of the incident. In an Instagram post, the actress shared the results of her medical evaluations, stating, “Verdict’s in… I do have brain damage from my (traumatic brain injury). Comforting to know my cognitive decline isn’t just peri-menopause, discomforting to know what an uphill battle it will be to try to reverse the deficiencies.”

She expressed gratitude for the support and concern from her fans, writing, “Thank you all for always asking, for always caring, and for your continued prayers.”

In an accompanying video, the 46-year-old actress, known for her role in The Hobbit, discussed her experience with a concussion. She mentioned that scan results showed “almost every area in [her] brain is functioning at a decreased capacity.”

“I do have brain damage from the TBI and possibly other factors going on,” she added.

Lilly also spoke about her current focus: “My job is now to hit the bottom of that with the doctors and then embark on the hard work of fixing it, which I don’t look forward to because I feel like hard work is all I do. But that’s okay.”

Earlier this year, the actress shared photos of the injuries she sustained after fainting on a rocky beach in May. In a Substack essay, she described the incident, writing, “I fainted at the beach. And fell face first into a boulder.” The photos included images of her bruised and lacerated nose, mouth, and chin, with one showing a dislodged front tooth.

Lilly recounted how she “blacked out again” on the way to the hospital. She noted that while medical staff acted quickly, they were more focused on finding the cause of her blackout than treating her facial injuries.

“You won’t find anything,” she said in a “woozy” voice.

She explained that she had experienced “absent” and fainting spells since childhood. Doctors initially suspected epilepsy but later settled on hypoglycemia without conducting proper tests. As she aged, however, she began to question this diagnosis.

Lilly wrote that she eventually reached the conclusion that her blackouts might be related to her soul seeking to return. “When I have had enough, when the pain becomes too great, the stresses beyond overwhelming, the shattered idealism crushing, [my] soul exits [my] body and returns to pure spirit.”

She emphasized that she is not alone in experiencing unexplained blackouts. “The nurse who was tending [to] me in the hospital told me that most patients with this issue are never given a medical answer as to why they blackout,” she explained.

“Not with heart monitors, glucose monitors nor blood tests. They just have to live in the mystery of not knowing.”

Lilly called her “unmedical” diagnosis “a beautiful invitation” to explore the possibility that there is “more to be felt in the not knowing.”
