Blue River Valley’s Brayden Swoveland Named Athlete of the Week

Brayden Swoveland, a standout player for the Blue River Valley boys basketball team, has been honored as The Star Press East Central Indiana High School Athlete of the Week, brought to you by IU Health. This recognition comes after Swoveland led his team to their first victory of the season with an impressive performance against Cambridge City Lincoln on Saturday, December 27.

Swoveland contributed significantly to the win, scoring 19 points, grabbing six rebounds, dishing out three assists, and recording two steals and a block. The Vikings secured a decisive 62-38 victory over their opponents, marking a significant milestone in their season.

Swoveland received an overwhelming number of votes, with 12,940 out of 24,082 cast (53.73%). This week’s runner-up was Gabbi Patrick from Shenandoah girls basketball, who earned 9,570 votes (39.74%).

Eligibility and Nomination Process

Students participating in all varsity sports are eligible for nomination, and each athlete can only be named Athlete of the Week once per season, per sport. Additionally, athletes from one school cannot win more than three consecutive weeks.

  • Abe Ervin, Monroe Central girls basketball:

    Ervin played a crucial role in leading the Golden Bears to a 51-46 win over Hagerstown on Monday, December 22, with 21 points, four rebounds, three steals, and two assists.

  • Gabbi Patrick, Shenandoah girls basketball:

    Patrick had an exceptional week, scoring 13 points, grabbing four rebounds, and contributing four assists, four steals, and two blocks in a 74-22 win over Wes-Del on Tuesday, December 23. She also helped her team secure a 51-40 victory over Elwood in the Central Indiana Holiday Classic with 15 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, and three steals on Friday, December 26.

  • Carlee Lanzer, New Castle girls basketball:

    Lanzer delivered a stellar performance, scoring 25 points, grabbing five rebounds, dishing out five assists, and blocking a shot in New Castle’s 69-61 win over Hamilton Heights in the New Castle Holiday Tournament championship.

  • Luke Morgan, Monroe Central boys basketball:

    Morgan led the Golden Bears to a 63-53 win over Northeastern on Tuesday, December 23, with 21 points, five steals, and four assists.

  • Jaxson Johnson, Muncie Central boys basketball:

    Johnson scored 13 points in Central’s 60-58 loss to Bloomington South and then led the team with a game-high 24 points in a 56-53 win over Perry Meridian on Saturday, December 27, at the Community Cars Holiday Tournament at Bloomington South.

  • Jayden Comer, Jay County boys basketball:

    Comer was instrumental in the Patriots’ 60-55 victory over Wapahani on Saturday, December 27, scoring 23 points.

  • Brayden Swoveland, Blue River Valley boys basketball:

    As mentioned earlier, Swoveland led the Vikings to their first win of the season with 19 points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block in the 62-38 victory over Cambridge City Lincoln on Saturday, December 27.
