Health Experts Sound Alarm as Georgia Flu Cases Surge Post-Holidays
Georgia’s Flu Season: A Growing Concern
Georgia is currently experiencing one of the most challenging flu seasons in recent years, with health experts warning that the situation could deteriorate further in the coming weeks. The rise in infections has been attributed to holiday gatherings, which have created ideal conditions for the virus to spread. While some hope that cases will begin to decline later this month, it’s important to note that flu season can often extend into the spring, making vigilance essential.
In metro Atlanta, flu activity is at a very high level and is expected to worsen before it improves. In response to the growing threat, Emory Healthcare has introduced a 24/7 flu hotline to help residents access critical information and support. Dr. Jessica Howard-Anderson, a spokesperson for Emory Healthcare, explains that the hotline number—404-544-9358—is prominently displayed on all Emory Healthcare websites. She emphasizes that the next few weeks will be crucial as people return to work and school, increasing the potential for transmission.
The Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has labeled this flu season the most severe since 2018. According to their reports, over 3,100 Americans lost their lives to the virus in 2025. Health professionals are particularly concerned about a new variant that is spreading rapidly across the country, including in Georgia, which has been hit especially hard.
Preventive Measures and Vaccination Efforts
Despite the severity of the current season, doctors continue to encourage people to get vaccinated. They stress that it is still not too late to receive the flu shot, even if individuals are already experiencing symptoms. For those who do become infected, antiviral medications such as Tamiflu are recommended to help reduce the duration and severity of the illness.
Dr. Jessica Shepherd, chief medical officer for HERS, highlights the importance of vaccination. “Even for me personally, I was a little bit later in the season but I still got the flu vaccine,” she said. This sentiment is echoed by many healthcare professionals, who emphasize that getting vaccinated remains one of the most effective ways to protect oneself and others.
In addition to individual efforts, workplace policies are also evolving to promote better health outcomes. David Dodd, CEO of GeoVax, a vaccine developer based in Atlanta, notes that more companies are taking proactive steps to support their employees’ health. These initiatives include on-site vaccines, health screenings, and wellness benefits. Dodd describes this shift as good business sense, arguing that a healthier workforce leads to increased productivity and reduced absenteeism.
CDC Recommendations for Flu Prevention
The CDC has outlined several key strategies to help prevent the spread of the flu:
- Avoid close contact with others, especially those who are sick. If you are unwell, stay home to prevent spreading the virus.
- Stay home when you are sick. Return to normal activities only after your symptoms have improved and you’ve been fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication.
- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Wearing a mask can also help reduce the spread of the virus.
- Clean your hands frequently. Use soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when necessary.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth, as germs can easily enter the body through these areas.
- Improve air quality by bringing in fresh air, using air purifiers, or gathering outdoors.
- Practice good hygiene and maintain healthy habits, such as getting enough sleep, staying physically active, and eating nutritious food.
These measures, when combined with vaccination efforts, can significantly reduce the risk of infection and help curb the spread of the flu during this critical time.
