Englewood Health Joins Largest NJ Hospital Network, RWJBarnabas
Overview of the Merger
North Jersey has witnessed a significant development in the healthcare sector as two major hospital networks, RWJBarnabas Health and Englewood Health, have announced their merger. This strategic move aims to enhance healthcare services across the region by combining the strengths of both institutions. According to an Englewood spokesperson, the two organizations have signed an agreement for Englewood to become part of RWJBarnabas Health. However, this merger still requires approval from both the state and federal governments.
Englewood Health operates a hospital and various medical practices across Bergen, Hudson, and Passaic counties, serving a wide range of communities. On the other hand, RWJBarnabas Health is recognized as New Jersey’s largest academic health system. It encompasses 14 hospitals, employs over 45,000 individuals, and includes 9,000 doctors providing care at more than 700 locations. The organization was formed through the 2015 merger of Robert Wood Johnson and Barnabas Health, and it is based in Essex County.
RWJBarnabas Health also maintains a partnership with Rutgers University, which includes the Rutgers Cancer Institute and the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. This collaboration enhances the educational and research opportunities within the health system.
Agreement Terms and Benefits
Under the terms of the agreement, RWJBarnabas Health will make capital investments aimed at expanding Englewood’s outpatient services and community health programs. This initiative is expected to provide better access to healthcare for residents in the region.
Mark E. Manigan, the president and chief executive officer of RWJBarnabas Health, expressed his confidence in the merger, stating that Englewood Health has a long history of delivering superior care to the residents of Bergen County and surrounding areas. He emphasized that Englewood shares a perspective and culture aligned with RWJBarnabas Health’s mission of improving and sustaining the health of all New Jersey residents. Manigan noted that the evolving healthcare landscape presents both challenges and opportunities, and this merger will help address them effectively.
Warren Geller, the president and chief executive officer for Englewood Health, echoed these sentiments, highlighting that the transaction will ensure Englewood Health’s ability to deliver world-class care to its communities. He mentioned that the merger will allow for greater resources and more advanced technologies to be utilized in patient care.
Past Merger Attempt and Background
This is not the first time that Englewood Health has been involved in a merger attempt. In 2019, Hackensack Meridian Health announced plans to acquire Englewood, but the deal faced opposition from the federal government, leading to its stall.
Englewood Hospital, founded in 1890, has a rich history and has received numerous awards for its contributions to healthcare. The Englewood Health Physician Network comprises over 800 providers offering care at more than 100 locations across five counties in northern New Jersey.
