State Won’t Alter Vaccine Guidelines Despite CDC: Connecticut Health Official

CONNECTICUT — Connecticut’s top health official has expressed concern over the recent decision by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to reduce the number of recommended childhood vaccinations. The CDC announced on Monday that it will now recommend only 11 vaccinations, a significant decrease from the previous 17, effective immediately.

Dr. Manisha Juthani, commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Public Health, emphasized that the state is not following the CDC’s new recommendations. She stated that Connecticut continues to support its own vaccination guidelines, which include childhood immunizations as well as meningitis shots for teenagers.

Dr. Juthani pointed out that there is no new scientific evidence supporting the reduction in the number of vaccines. “What would break my heart is to have many children develop these diseases and science would have to reprove itself at the cost of lives of children that were lost,” she said.

The commissioner also acknowledged the growing issue of vaccine hesitancy, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. She expressed concern that families may be struggling to find clear and reliable information about vaccinations.

“Reach out to your pediatrician if you have questions,” Dr. Juthani advised. “Discuss it when you bring your child in for an appointment. Don’t give up on the information that we have had.”

The CDC’s decision to reduce the number of recommended vaccines is based on guidelines from Denmark. However, Dr. Juthani noted that Denmark is not as diverse as the United States. This lack of diversity could mean that the recommendations may not account for the unique health challenges faced by different populations in the U.S.

The changes have sparked debate among public health officials and parents alike. Some argue that reducing the number of vaccines could lead to a resurgence of preventable diseases, while others believe the change reflects a more streamlined approach to immunization.

Public health experts are urging parents to stay informed and consult with their healthcare providers before making any decisions about their children’s vaccinations. Dr. Juthani stressed the importance of maintaining high vaccination rates to protect both individual and community health.

  • The CDC’s new recommendations have raised concerns about potential gaps in protection against certain diseases.
  • Public health officials are emphasizing the need for continued education and communication about the benefits of vaccines.
  • Parents are being encouraged to seek guidance from trusted medical professionals to make informed choices.

As the discussion continues, the focus remains on ensuring that all children receive the necessary vaccinations to protect their health and the health of those around them. The Connecticut Department of Public Health is committed to providing accurate information and support to families throughout this process.
