Prime’s defensive overhaul advances as top DL enters transfer portal
Colorado’s Defensive Line Rebuild Takes a Major Step Forward
Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes have made a significant move in their effort to revamp the team’s defensive line. After struggling with one of the worst run defenses in the country last season, the Buffaloes knew they needed to make substantial changes up front. The Transfer Portal has become a key part of that strategy, and the latest addition is arguably the most impactful yet.
Colorado has already added six of its 11 portal commitments on the defensive line, and none of them have been more significant than the recent commitment from Tulane transfer Santana Hopper. Hopper, ranked as the No. 1 defensive lineman in Saturday Blitz’s Transfer Portal rankings, chose Colorado in what marks a major win for Coach Prime and the Buffs.
Hopper began his college career at Appalachian State before transferring to Tulane, where he had an impressive 2025 season. He recorded double-digit tackles-for-loss and 4.5 sacks, showcasing his ability to make plays behind the line of scrimmage. While he may not be the biggest player at 265 pounds, Hopper’s speed, agility, and overall power make him a formidable presence on the field.
There may be concerns about how Hopper will perform against larger interior linemen in the Big 12, but his determination and work ethic are undeniable. He is the type of player who will fight, scratch, and claw his way into the backfield to create opportunities for the Buffaloes. This kind of mindset aligns perfectly with what Sanders is looking for in his program.
A Strategic Approach to the Transfer Portal
One of the most notable trends in this transfer cycle is the approach that Sanders has taken. Unlike previous years, where the focus was often on bringing in players from Power Four schools, this time around, the coach has targeted talent from Group-of-Six and FCS programs. These players have proven themselves at the college level, and Sanders is betting on their ability to succeed at a higher level.
All 11 of Colorado’s current portal additions have come from outside the Power Four structure. This decision reflects a calculated strategy aimed at finding players who can contribute immediately rather than relying on potential or hype.
Hopper is just one of several defensive linemen who have committed to Colorado through the portal. Others include Yamil Talib (Charlotte), Lamont Lester (Monmouth), Dylan Manuel (App State), Toby Anene (North Dakota State), and Balansama Kamara (Albany). These additions signal a clear emphasis on strengthening the defensive line and building a more competitive team.
What This Means for Colorado’s Future
The addition of Hopper and other high-quality transfers represents a turning point for the Buffaloes. With a stronger defensive line, the team is better positioned to improve its performance on the field and compete at a higher level in the Big 12.
Sanders’ philosophy of identifying and developing talent from under-the-radar programs has already started to pay off. By focusing on players who have already demonstrated success, the Buffaloes are laying the foundation for long-term growth and competitiveness.
As the transfer portal continues to evolve, Colorado’s strategic approach could serve as a model for other programs looking to rebuild their rosters effectively. For now, the focus remains on integrating these new players into the team and preparing for the upcoming season.
