Riqui Puig Out Until 2027 Due to Injury Setback

Riqui Puig’s Injury Setback and Path to Recovery

LA Galaxy midfielder Riqui Puig has faced another significant setback in his recovery from a serious knee injury. The club announced on Saturday that the 26-year-old player has undergone another anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructive surgery on his left knee, delaying his return to play until the start of the 2027 MLS season.

This is the second time Puig has required surgical intervention for his injury. He initially suffered a torn ACL on November 30, 2024, during the second half of the 2024 Western Conference final. Despite the pain, he played for over 30 minutes in the 1-0 victory against the Colorado Rapids. Subsequent tests and an MRI confirmed the injury, which ruled him out of the 2024 MLS Cup final, where the Galaxy defeated the New York Red Bulls.

Puig missed the entire 2025 MLS season as he focused on rehabilitation. However, recent medical checkups revealed that the initial surgery did not yield the desired results, prompting the need for a second procedure. The operation took place in Barcelona, and the Galaxy confirmed that Puig is expected to make a full recovery and be ready to rejoin the team for the 2027 season.

A Personal and Professional Challenge

Puig described the latest development as “one of the hardest and most complicated moments” of his life. In a post on his personal Instagram account, he shared his emotional response to the news:

“After a whole year of working every day with a single goal in mind, yesterday at a medical checkup, the doctor gave me news you never want to hear: the plastic surgery wasn’t good and I had to go back to surgery.”

He continued:

“It’s not easy to find the words after all we’ve been through. Without a doubt, it’s one of the hardest and most complicated moments I’ve ever had to manage in my life, both on a personal and professional level. But today I can say that the surgery went well, and that gives me strength and reassurance to look forward. Now I only have one thing on my mind: start working already, train with more excitement than ever and try to be the Riqui Puig you all know again. More want, more hungry, and more strength.”

Contributions to LA Galaxy

Despite the challenges, Puig has made a significant impact during his time with the LA Galaxy. In the 2024 season, he was a key player, recording 21 goals and 24 assists in 36 games across all competitions. Over his career with the club, he has tallied 29 goals and 32 assists in 82 matches.

His performances earned him recognition as an MLS All-Star in both 2023 and 2024. Fans and teammates alike have praised his dedication, creativity, and leadership on the field.

Looking Ahead

While the road to recovery is long, Puig remains determined to return to the pitch stronger than ever. His resilience and positive attitude have been evident throughout this difficult period. As the Galaxy continues to support him, fans are hopeful that the 2027 season will mark a triumphant return for one of the league’s most promising talents.

For now, Puig is focusing on his rehabilitation and preparing to once again showcase his skills on the field. With the backing of his team and supporters, he is taking each step toward his goal with renewed determination.
