New Year, New Gains: Tips to Start and Stick to Your Fitness Journey
MINOT, ND (KXNET) — The phrase “New Year, New Me” has become a common mantra for many people around the world. As 2026 begins, individuals across North Dakota and beyond are looking to make significant changes in their lives, both physically and mentally. This fresh start on the calendar often leads to an increase in gym memberships and fitness activities as people strive to achieve their goals.
“We always see an influx of members and people wanting to check out the Y at the beginning of the year,” said Maddie Koppinger, the YMCA Group Fitness Coordinator. “That looks like fuller machines, maybe some wait times on the fitness equipment, busier member count in the group fitness room, and just new faces all around.”
While the enthusiasm to begin a new fitness journey is understandable, experts at the Minot Family YMCA warn that rushing into intense workouts can lead to burnout. Koppinger emphasized the importance of taking it slow and finding a routine that works for each individual.
“Stay away from the crash course, the things that you’re going to fall off the bandwagon on,” Koppinger said. “Going too hard too fast, that sort of thing. Just come as you can and find something that you really enjoy. Make fitness your lifestyle.”
Consistency is key when it comes to building healthy habits, according to regulars at the YMCA. They suggest maintaining a steady and sustainable routine that can be continued long after the initial excitement of the new year fades.
“Do things that you can see yourself doing five years from now,” said gymgoer Jay Deide. “Don’t come in and try overnight to hit it hard for a month and think you’re going to experience all this. Go slow, be sensible, get some advice from trainers here, out on the Internet or wherever you look.”
In addition to consistency, variety plays a crucial role in keeping motivation high. Gym regulars recommend incorporating different types of activities into one’s routine to maintain a fresh and positive attitude. From weights and running to more recreational options, there are numerous ways to stay active.
“There are different things that they have here to offer, whether it be swimming pools, saunas, racquetball, weightlifting, exercise classes,” Deide said.
Tips for a Successful Fitness Journey
- Start Slowly: Rushing into intense workouts can lead to injury and burnout. Begin with manageable routines and gradually increase intensity.
- Find What You Enjoy: Choose activities that you genuinely like, making it easier to stick with them over time.
- Seek Guidance: Consult with trainers or use online resources to create a personalized fitness plan.
- Stay Consistent: Regular participation is more effective than sporadic, intense workouts.
- Mix It Up: Incorporate a variety of exercises to keep your routine interesting and challenging.
By following these guidelines, individuals can build a sustainable fitness lifestyle that extends far beyond the initial enthusiasm of the new year. Whether it’s through group classes, personal training, or recreational activities, the YMCA offers a wide range of options to suit different preferences and goals.
As the new year progresses, the focus should remain on long-term health and well-being rather than quick fixes. By adopting a balanced approach to fitness, individuals can achieve lasting results and maintain a healthier lifestyle throughout the year.
