Golden Retriever Seeks Comfort After Seeing Sister in Cone
Dogs often have to wear a cone around their neck if they’ve recently had surgery or have some type of wound that the veterinarian wants them to avoid licking. The plastic headgear almost looks like a megaphone engulfing their head and it is impossible to ignore. Canines are amazing at adapting to their situation and quickly learn how to navigate their environment despite the medical apparatus. Still, other pets in the house sometimes find the unusual contraption a bit off-putting.
Gus the Golden Retriever was definitely unsettled by his fur baby sister’s cone and needed some reassurance to get through the experience.
In the TikTok from @retrievernamedgus, the gorgeous Golden was anxiously huddling near his mom. The camera panned over to Gus’s sibling, another Golden Retriever, who was wearing a cone.
“Help — my dog is terrified of my other dog’s cone,” the onscreen text read, with the caption adding, “I woke up to Gus crawling on my head at midnight last night because he heard the cone move slightly.”
“Gus, it is your sister,” his mom reassured him. “She’s not going to hurt you.”
The frightened fur baby wouldn’t listen. When his mom’s attempts at comfort didn’t help, he tried to escape to a different area to get away from his sister. She followed Gus and even started sniffing him, bringing the cone completely into his space. Again, Gus tried to leave the room but she followed him and tried to block his exit. He just wanted to high-tail it out of there and get to a cone-less room.
Was Gus’s Sister Baiting Him?
Either Gus’s Golden sister didn’t realize he was actually scared, or she was being a typical sibling and teasing her brother. Viewers of the video shared similar stories about their dogs, with many suspecting Gus’s sister purposely tried to rile him.
“Both of my dogs saw a dog with a cone on while we were walking and they were mystified,” one shared.
“She said ‘oooh I’m gonna getcha’,” another joked.

“We had to switch to the inflatable cone because of this — my dog was having no parts of his brother’s cone,” a follower posted.
“She’s taunting him like a true sibling,” someone pointed out.
“She walked right over and rubbed the cone all over him,” a viewer remarked.
Maybe some time and extra hugs from Gus’s mom will help him through his cone aversion.
