DEP issues ‘Code Orange’ for area, expects higher-than-usual air pollution Sunday

(WHTM) — Sunday will be a “Code Orange Air Quality Action Day” for some area counties, as state officials expect pollutants to be higher than normal.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) issued the declaration for Dauphin, Cumberland, Lebanon, Lancaster, and York counties.

“Very light winds will limit any pollutant dispersion and mixing tonight into Sunday, with PM 2.5 concentrations expected to be in the code ORANGE range,” DEP says. “Air quality should improve Sunday evening as a cold front is expected to pass, increasing surface flow.”

“Sensitive groups of the population including children, older adults, and those with respiratory conditions should avoid heavy outdoor activity during this time,” DEP continued.

DEP says residents and businesses can help reduce fine particulate matter pollution by reducing or eliminating fireplace or wood stove use, avoid open burning of leaves, trash, and other materials, and avoid using gas-powered lawn and garden equipment.
