Blood Bank of Hawaii holds annual holiday blood drive

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Blood Bank of Hawaii (BBH) kicked off the season of giving with its seventh Annual Holiday Blood Drive took place at Waikele Shopping Center Saturday.

The blood bank is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, except for three days of the year: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s, and is urging people to donate.

“The need for blood during the holidays is even greater,” said BBH president Kim-Anh Nguyen. “In fact, this last year, our hospital patients needed 2% more red cells and 3% more than we expected, and so our shelves are going to be pretty bare.”

Nguyen added that although many think donations go up during the holidays, it’s actually the opposite.

“Everybody’s rushing around during the holidays, shopping, but not thinking that cancer doesn’t take a vacation, car accidents, and other disasters,” she said. “Do you remember last year with the fireworks incident? That was New Year’s. Then that fire that killed that poor firefighter, that’s New Year’s. It’s when those events happen, it’s the blood on the shelf that saves those lives.”

The blood bank set out a goal to reach at least 122 donations, which is only about a day’s supply.

Dustin Guillermo has been donating blood since 2005, and said his grandfather is his reason for supporting the blood bank.

“When my grandfather was alive, he underwent several blood transfusions,” he said, “and I realized how important it was for not only myself, but other donors to donate just so people in need can get the blood supply that they need because (if your) blood supply is low, it’s something you can’t grow, can’t cultivate, it comes from the donors.”

Guillermo added, “Every donation saves multiple lives, and just so that I can say that I helped someone see another birthday, see another sunrise, see another day at work or school or anywhere in between, it makes you feel really good.”
